    Hi all,

'In early March, the Brigade took its turn in the Saar sector of the Maginot Line. After a few days near Metz the 5th relieved a battalion of the DCLI in the 'Ligne de Recueuil', where they worked for ten days on improving the defences. Then, on the 23rd March, they took over a sector of the 'Ligne de Contact' from the 1st East Surrey Regt. Here they carried out active patrolling, but there was no contact with the enemy, the full moon restricting movement on both sides. On the 28th they were relieved by the 2nd Royal Warwickshire Regt and returned to Tourcoing on the 31st.'

Thats an extract from the Northamptonshire Regiment history and concerns the 5th Battalion.

I have searched online but can't find any map or reference that gives a specific location for the 'Ligne de Contact'. Where was it?

    Any help gratefully received.

    Cheers

3rd Gren Gds were on the Maginot Line in February.
Their history mentions the Halsdorf * sector & the village of Zeurange.
(*Maybe a typo , probably Halstroff.)

Mention is made of the DCLI losing a platoon in a well executed German attack.

See war diary for 3GG here for more locations.

    Hi Owen,

Thanks for posting that. It gives me some idea of where the 5th Northants might have been.

I have the War Diary from the battalions return to Tourcoing to evacuation but I think the best bet will be to track down the War Diary that covers their time on the Maginot Line.

    Cheers
