Can anyone help with where both these regiments were. I believe they were both in Burma and China. The latter being involved with Operation Thursday?

If the regiments were based in China what would they be doing there?

There was the British military contingent in the British Concession of the International Settlement in Shanghai together with French, Italian and American military contingents. At the beginning of the War there were two battalions in Shanghai, 2nd East Surrey Regiment and 1st Seaforth Highlanders. Both 1st Royal Fusiliers and 1st Lancashire Fusiliers were in India at that time.

Here you have a story about 2nd East Surrey Regiment in China between 1938 and 1940:

    The Surreys in Shanghai

Three battalions of the Lancashire Fusiliers fought in Burma: 1st with Chindits, 1st/8th with 2nd Infantry Division and 10th with 14th Indian Division. 1st Royal Fusiliers served in the Middle East, North and East Africa and Italy.

I have a soldiers service record which notes the following:- (See attached)

What can be ascertained from this? Can his battalion be confirmed?

I'm not clear as to why he was moved about, do the dates ties in with events of the time.

If he were a POW at any stage would this be clear in his service record?

Does this bit of info clarify anything? (Part of a different thread)

Well he was probably with 1st RF in India, Egypt and Sudan before he was transferred to Burma (1st RF in that time was in Syria). But I don't know why he had been in China or what B.B.R.C. means. Maybe somebody else will be able to give you a answer.

    Hi Gents,

B.B.R.C, I think this stands for Base Reinforcement Camp, with possibly the first 'B' standing for British, but I am not sure about that bit?

Eddie, the service record suggests 1 R Fus, they were in India when the war started.
Might be worth asking for the two Devine threads to be merged?

Eddie, as you started the thread just put a post on here asking a MOD (moderator) to merge the 2 threads - try to give both thread names.
