    DoB 17/4/26.

A NIF of mine wishes to learn more about his father's service in the RE in the Far east during WW2.

How can he go about this? Are his service papers available?

Odd that no one has bothered to answer as usually three or more would be on instructing you to get in touch with Glasgow records office for his service details - i don't have the actual address

to hand but i am sure that someone will be on soon with all the details of how to go about it - takes a while to get them and can be free to next of kin etc - all others pay 30GBP's

    Cheers

You need to know the unit(s) he served with to find out more. If you don't know the units a copy of his service records would reveal this.

    John,

This is the link you need for Service records:
    http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/army.html

Cost £30 and be prepared to with a few months. Make sure you fill the forms in correctly with supporting documents.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

There you go - thought someone would be along soon - now you have his service number in the 148***** series of initial training in the General Service Corps from approx spring 1943 -

then posting to RE's - date of birth- address for Glasgow - save up the 30GBP's - fill in all the bumf - and wait - and wait and wait some more - then apply for the war diaries of his unit /s etc - then

you will know all about what he did - and when he did it- just keep us posted ...

    Cheers

Obliged, gents - it's for a pal of mine, and not me. He's a confirmed Internet-hater, but I'll ask him for the info: he owes it to your advice, after all!

Thankfully, my dad (KSLI) is still with us: he was working on "essential war work" and so call-up was deferred six months to December '44. By the time he'd finished his training it was all over.
