    Hello everyone,
I am hoping that you might be able to kelp me with information.
My Grandad was a fitter & turner and was excempt from fighting in WW11.
He volunteered and joined the Royal Engineers, he was a sapper.
His name is John Maurice Braney ( known as Jacky ). Born 22 July 1921 in Middlesbourgh Yorkshire. Mum said he was behind enemy lines as a spy and was given several medals one being the Victorian cross. He apparently never talked about the war.
I have no idea how to find any further information on his war records.
Any information you could help me with would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards
    Jennifer

Thank you for the welcome CL1.
I will have a look at the forms I need to fill in to get my grandads service record. Thought the 30 pound ( $ 45.00 au) a bit steep though.
    Thank you

Hello and welcome to the forum - getting a copy of his service records is the best first step as Clive has suggested

    Good luck

Hello Jennifer and welcome to the forum.
30 pounds sounds a lot but if you get the FULL service records there is a lot of detail on them and WELL worth the money and wait

Hi Jennifer, welcome to the forum. I am in tassie and have applied for a service record for my late uncle who was british and in the 77haa regiment in ww2. Make sure you ask for full service records, they say it's well worth the money and wait. Not sure if you can pay online, i got a bank cheque which cost a bit more. Also I phoned the army records in glasgow yesterday to see how it was going and they are a bit behind so you may have quite a few months to wait. Hopefully other members may be able to help you help you too. Good luck with your research

If you think thats expensive don't ask the National Archives for a copy of his units war diaries ;)

Thank you everyone for your reply's. I did not mean that the 30 pounds
( $ 45.00 Au ) was expensive just more than I thought it would be. But I have found that tracing my family tree is costly, but I am so addicted !
My other grandad John Aspey was killed in Italy in WW11. When an American plane that was being tested carashed into the tent he was in and killed 10 people.
Find it hard tracing my british family from Australia as it is not a case of visiting places to find out info.
I am visiting England next month, is there somewhere I should visit to gain family tree info on my geneology search ??
    Regards
    Jennifer

    Hi Jennifer
Is it your grandads family you are tracing in Middlesbrough? Is that where you are visiting?
