Hi Can anyone help me please. I've just found my husband's grandfather in findmypast's RA transfer list. In the Transfers column is written "Cancelled M. OL Titchfield St London 18.4.1941" It might be M. DL - it is hard to tell. but it is definitely L not I I can't find any explanation for this anywhere. I was surprised to find this as grandfather died in an accident on 22nd June 1941 Thanks Ann
Hi Ann, any chance you can post the relevant page on here, it would help. I understand if you do not want to, if it's to personal. David
Hi Ann If you wish to include images in your post - In the bottom right hand corner of these reply boxes there is another button marked 'More Reply Options' - click on that and then scroll down the page to see a button under the words Attach Files 'Choose Files' - this allows you to download files from your computer to the post you are making. You just need to make sure that the file is not oversize (max 10 Mb) TD
Hi Ann, I may be completely off course, I think it might be M D L. Having looked at Titchfield St for 1940/1942. there was several MOD offices. He could have been going to a meeting or give a talk? Hence Ministry Defence Lecture cancelled. Just prior to April that area was bomb, so it's possible that's the reason for his visit to be cancelled. Just a thought David
there was no ministry of defence in WW2 it was the War Office MoD not named until the 60s. I will add 'Royal Artillery' to the thread title in the hope it attracts someone who knows.
Thank you Owen. Will have to try again Thought I was on to something☹️. Should have double checked David
Welcome to the forum Ann Just another thought......'my eyes' are reading it as, M O L - so could it relate to Ministry of Labour ? Suz
Hi All Thanks for the thoughts so far. I've added the rest of the document. The column in question says "Transfers to other Corps" or cause of becoming non-effective and record of re-enlistment (if any) (including date). So did he sign up (or was called up) and then this is the reason he was released? Could it be something medical? All the other items on the page are written in ink and are transfers but this looks like it might be in pencil He was a solicitor in the East End of London, Jewish, and drowned 2 months after this date. Happy New Year from sunny, warm Wellington NZ Ann
Hi Ann it may not have anything to do with it, but, there was a Synagogue badly damaged in the blitz around 1940 it was beyond repair. Could he have had something to do with attending a meeting? Just another thought David
