A thread search hasn't thrown this one up.
Wellington Mk.X LP397 from No.28 OTU RAF Wymeswold and flying from Castle Donington, Derbyshire on 13 June 1944 was seen to enter a thunderstorm and shortly after to plunge near vertically to crash near the village of Mayfield. All on board were killed. The crew were almost exclusively RCAF, even the pilot who although listed as RAF was a Canadian who had travelled to England to enlist earlier in the war.
    The crew were;

Alfred Bailey flew Bristol Beaufort's and was stationed at RAF North Coates in 1940

    I found the following here.

Pilot Officer ALFRED BAILEY, R.A.F. 40976, Pilot Officer, Royal Air Force Age 26 Died 1.8.1940
Pilot Officer, ALFRED BAILEY, Royal Air Force, 26 years of age, was serving with No 22 Squadron based at RAF Gosport, was engaged in flying a Vickers Vildebeeste aircraft on 1st of August 1940, with him were 977714 Aircraftsman Class 2 E.S Budd and a civilian scientist named H. Dawson. The aircraft, K 6408 was part of the Torpedo Development Flight, was scheduled to drop a torpedo on the range off Stokes Bay and then return to the airfield at Gosport less than a mile away. P/O Bailey approached the range, adjusting his altitude for the optimum height of 50 feet above the waves. Observers on Ryde Pier noted that the aircraft's nose suddenly dipped, whether as a result of the gusty wind is not known but, with no height to recover, the Vildebeeste crashed into the sea.
As with all torpedo drops, the range was policed by various support boats. These boats immediately went to the aid of the sinking aircraft. A/C2 Rudd was rescued from the sea and although badly injured, after hospitalisation he recovered. A/C2 Rudd was the only member the aircraft's crew to survive. The civilian scientist and Pilot Officer Alfred Bailey were dragged to the seabed with the aircraft, and were not recovered until the 4 days later. The wreckage of the machine was located by divers, and hauled to the surface. The bodies of the two unfortunate men were at last recovered from the mangled when the salvage vessel moored up at Priddys Hard.
P/O Alfred Bailey, R.A.F., was buried on the 7th of August 1939, and is laid to rest in the War Graves Section (see plans on back pages), Row 1 Grave 6, and is commemorated by a CWG headstone. (Mr H. Dawson was buried at his hometown of Bradford, Yorkshire.

Information for Sqn Ldr Clark found here.

Squadron Leader CECIL CHRISTAIN CLARK, RAF 70130, Squadron Leader, Royal Air Force Age 42 Died 30.11.1939
70130, Squadron Leader CECIL CHRISTAIN CLARK, RAF, was the son of Henry and Katherine Marie Clark. He was the husband of Katherine Haswell Clark, of North Berwick, East Lothian. He was flying a ‘Skua’ aircraft L 2981 of No 2 Anti Aircraft Co-operation Unit based at RAF Gosport. It was late afternoon of Thursday 30th November 1939, the visibility was closing in, Squadron Leader Clark an experienced pilot knew that he would have to return to his airfield, returning from the Fraser AA Range off Eastney, Portsmouth, the visibility became nil. What happened next is unsure, but his aircraft was seen to go out of control and drop from the sky, plunging into the shallow water of the upper reaches of Portsmouth Harbour, at a point off Bedenham Point, known locally as Fareham Creek.
With dusk fast approaching, a boat was dispatched from the shore, in an attempt to rescue the downed aviator. With hardly any visibility and light failing, the searchers could not locate the pilot. The aircraft had plunged deep into the mud of the shallow water. Hope of rescue faded, and was finally abandoned until the following day, when the search was resumed. The aircraft was located late in the afternoon, but unfortunately the body of Squadron Leader Clark was not in the cockpit. Days went by and, as no sign of the body had been found, a memorial service was held in Squadron Leader Clark's memory. It was not until the 20th of April the next year that Clark's body was found, probably dislodged by the strong Spring tides, recovered from Portchester Creek, half a mile from where he had crashed.
Squadron Leader CECIL CHRISTAIN CLARK, R.A.F., was buried on the 24th April 1940, and is laid to rest in the War Graves Section Row1 Grave 2, and is commemorated by a CWG headstone.

On Friday 16th August 1940, heavy air attacks on south coast airfields continued. RAF Station, Gosport and the Royal Naval Air Station at Lee-on-Solent, were the designated targets for part of a large force of enemy aircraft, which split up into three smaller formations, as they approached the Isle of Wight. One formation attacked RAF Tangmere, the main Sector Station for Sector ‘A’ of No. 11 Group. Despite being intercepted, the enemy raiders succeeded in destroying a couple of hangars, and badly damaging many other buildings. Casualties were heavy, in one air-raid shelter, eighteen WRAF personnel were killed, when the shelter received a direct hit. The third formation turned back on its self. This formation consisted of Junkers 88’s and they dive bombed the RADAR Station on St. Boniface Down, above Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight. This Ventnor Station, was part of the Chain of early warning system. The personnel had detected the oncoming large flight, and had taken shelter when the planes were nearly overhead. Thankfully no personnel were killed. But the RADAR equipment was so badly damaged that the Station remained out of service for around four weeks. The remaining formation forged on ahead, attacking the airfields at Gosport and Lee-on-Solent. The attack started at 13:00p.m., when ten Ju 87’s masked by the sun, dive bombed from 10,000 feet reaching just 500 feet above the ground they released their bombs. The ground defences opened up with everything they had, but to little avail. Again, the airfield’s non-essential personnel had been ordered to take shelter. The Technical Blocks, cookhouse and a house were seriously damaged.

Corporal GEORGE ATKINSON, Royal Air Force, age 26, was the son of Andrew Cosser Mather and Louisa Atkinson, he came from Jarrow, Co. Durham. He was busy on routine duties on the airfield. Corporal Atkinson was among those killed, it is believed that he was in one of the hangars, which were badly damaged. The air station took some time to recover after the raid. The Atkinson family lost two other sons during the Second World War, both are commemorated on the headstone of their brother George. Corporal GEORGE ATKINSON, Royal Air Force, was buried on Wednesday 21st August 1940, in the War Graves Section (see plans on back pages), Row 1 Grave 10, and is commemorated by a CWG headstone. The Station’s fire engine, which rushed to put out the fire was hit, Corporal ALLEN JAMES STEWART (48) and A/C 2 ROBERT TERENCE YATES (21) were killed.

In the anti-aircraft gun positions, Private WILLIAM TEES (27) and Private NORMAN DENIS WENHAM (25) were killed when their gun position was hit. They were serving with Middlesex Regiment, who at the time was drafted as part of the airfields ground defences. Mr EUGENE MORRIARTY (26) a civilian construction worker, employed by Wimpey’s was working on expansion of the airfield by Rowner Lane. He was trying to take shelter, but was killed by a near miss, when the bomb exploded.

Just to the north of the airfield a heavy anti-aircraft battery sited at Holbrook, were in the thick of the action. As one of the Stuka dive-bombers slightly overshot, he delayed his bomb release, and aimed at the gun site. The bomb fell right in front of No. 4 gun. A sergeant lost his arm in the blast. Gunner JACK BUNDAY (25), manning the gun, was hit by a large piece of shrapnel, which tore through the armoured protection around the gun, fatally wounding him. He was taken to Haslar, Royal Naval Hospital, but died a few hours later. The battery, manned by men of the 215th Battery, 57th Regiment of the Royal Artillery, continued to fire with the remaining three guns. It is of high merit, that the women of the NAAFI, also serving at the gun-site, were commended for their bravery and courage in immediately going to the aid of the injured men. Unlike the reactions, the ‘big brass’ said would happen when they were under fire! One up to all the brave women who served during wartime.

Details of the burials, which took place 20th August 1940, in the War Graves Section: Gunner Bunday buried Row 4 Grave 12, Corporal Stewart Row 1 Grave 12, Private Tees Row 2 Grave 4, Private Wenham Row 2 Grave 2, A/C 2 Yates Row 2 Grave 8

Also buried on the 20th August 1940, was Mr Morriarty, who was laid to rest Plot 195 Space 65, and is commemorated by a Civilian War Grave headstone.

Sergeant Wireless Operator/Air Gunner MALCOLM DOBBIE, R.A.F., was the son of John and Edith Dobbie, of Mile End, Essex. And Flight Sergeant Pilot, WILBUR JAMES SHAVER, R.C.A.F., the son of Joseph I and Nina M. Shaver, who came from Lancing, Michigan, in the United States of America. They took off in a Bolton Paul Defiant DR 896. The aircraft was an old obsolete night fighter, which was used at No 2 Anti Aircraft Co-operation Flight based at RAF Gosport for target towing; the date was 16th of August 1943.

The routine flight to the Anti Aircraft Range off Eastney, Portsmouth, was trouble free, however, during the exercise, the aircraft nose-dived into the sea from a height of about 200 feet, killing the pilot, Bill Shaver and Winchman, Malcolm Dobbie instantly. During operations to locate and recover the bodies and wreckage of the aircraft, the body of another airman was found (Sgt. Moffatt -see entry below).

Flt. Sgt. 'Bill' Shaver was an American from Lansing, Michigan, crossed Lake Huron into Canada, where he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force at Windsor, Ontario, on 21st November 1941. After his training, he was posted to this Country on 30th November the following year, posted to 1601 Flight on the 13th April 1943. He was transferred to 1622 Flight a week later.

Pilot Officer HENRY EDGAR CHARLES ELLIOTT, R.A.F.V.R. 80785, Pilot Officer, Pilot, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 20 Died 7.2.1942

Pilot Officer HENRY EDGAR CHARLES ELLIOTT, R.A.F.V.R., came from the Perry Bar area of Birmingham. He was a member of the Volunteer Reserve of the R.A.F., with the outbreak of hostilities, he joined the regular service, he was 20 years of age, and the son of Harry and Fanny A.M. Elliott. P/O Elliott's first posting was to 86 Squadron, on whose strength he remained until being posted to RAF Gosport for flying duties with the Torpedo Development Unit. On the 7th of February 1942, the day dawned fine but with haze and some local fog, wind strength force 5 from north to north-west, with a visibility fluctuating between 1 to 3 miles.

P/O Elliott was lined up on the grass runway No. 2, at RAF Gosport Air Station. The purpose of the flight was to gain experience of the type of aircraft. The other person aboard was, 1188825 Aircraftsman Class 1, St Clair Roderick James Andrews R.A.F.V.R., age 24 who came from the Torquay area of Devon. Engaging full power, the Bristol Beaufort Mk 2 service number AW 335, thundered down the grass runway, at the critcal moment of take-off. The aircraft lost power bounced back to the ground only to rise again to a height of 10-15 feet over the old Rowner Road, where it crashed into a tree outside St. Mary the Virgin Church, and immediately burst into flames. Emergency services rushed to the scene in a vain bid to rescue the crew of two, but as reports stated they could not get near enough owing to the flames and heat to render any assistance.

The Board of Inquiry could not positively state the cause of the crash, owing to a lack of evidence, but it was strongly believed that one or both engines failed during take off.

Many suffered from tropical deceases. And could not cope with illnesses brought on by winter climate.

Flying Officer PETER SAVILL HANDLEY, R.A.F., was found dead in his room at the Officers Quarters at R.A.F. Gosport after a gunshot was heard at 11.35pm on the night of the 22nd of May 1941. At the inquest held five days later, it was established that F/O Handley had been involved in an aircraft crash a couple of days before his death, and that and it was believed, that he would be held liable for the crash. He had been posted to the Gosport air station about a month before his death. Mr. Charles Henry Stevenson, accountant for the Officer’s Mess, said that on Thursday morning he received back from the bank, a cheque, which Handley had made out for his April Mess Bill, it was ‘Insufficient Funds’.

F/O Isaac’s, the station's Medical Officer stated that F/O Handley was found lying on the floor, a revolver with one round discharged was found at his side. Flight Lieutenant Roy Herbert Mathew’s testified that, he occupied the room below the deceased officer. He had heard a bang like the sound of a door slamming, Declaring there was no evidence to show the state of the dead officer’s mind, at the time of his death. Corporal DOUGLAS JOHN LE MASURIER, R.A.F. 512292, Corporal, Royal Air Force. Age 24 Died 23.1.1943

Corporal DOUGLAS JOHN LE MASURIER, Royal Air Force, was 24 years of age when he lost his life, whilst serving aboard a Royal Air Force pinnace, service no. 1289. On Saturday 23rd January 1943, the vessel, one of No. 30 Air Sea Rescue Marine Unit, was patrolling some 15 miles south of the Isle of Wight. Two German fighter aircraft roaming the English Channel spotted the rescue vessel. Within seconds, the craft was under attack by the fighters, (thought later to be Focke Wulf 190's). During the attack Cpl. Le Masurier, the coxswain, was hit by cannon fire from the strafing attackers and died shortly after. Other members of the crew were wounded in following attacks. Taking on water through the damage inflicted below the waterline, the vessel was in a serious situation, stopping up the holes as best they could, they made for land. Finally making landfall after an anxious dash for shore. Records show that the only fatal casualty that day was Cpl Le Masurier, the others recovered from their wounds. Information by Den Budden
