Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, I'm new to WWII British military service records (more familiar with WWI); I sent a medal entitlement (BWM) & service enquiry to the MoD about my great grandfather, Richard James Dufty, who served in the Home Guard. All I have to prove that he did serve is this photo of him. As you can see he is wearing his trio of WWI ribbons (he served in the North Somerset Yeomanry). Unfortunately, the MoD came back to me and stated that they couldn't find anything in their archives for a 'Richard James Dufty', and that if I have his certificate of service or anything similar, I would need to send that to them so they could re look at the archives. I don't have any of his Home Guard records. As you can tell i'm a bit stuck... here is all that I know of Richard James Dufty as of 1939: DoB - 21/12/1893 (Bedminster, Bristol) Home address - 4 Market Square, Bristol Occupation - Printer Storekeeper at E. S. & A. Robinson He was also known as 'Jim' by most people, so i'm not sure if that would've been the name on his records? Any help with this would be really appreciated.
So you applied for his Home Guard service records by copying and completing the forms from this site - Request Home Guard service records ? which you will have included a copy of his death certificate? TD
At the risk of digression, he appears to have the Territorial Medal which is actually rarer than the 1914 medal (AKA Mons Star) which means that he had joined the TA and signed the agreement to be posted outside Britain two years before WW1
Hi, I presume you have knowledge of his WW1 service but here is his MIC showing his entitlement to the most common WW1 Trio - 14/15 Star, BWM & VM. Steve
The OP has a complete Ancestry tree for him and has all the cards for his WW1 service, I see he also has his death details, hence my question above as he may not have sent a copy of it - I dont know TD
Sorry I should have clarified - I filled out the medal entitlement form and also the request home guard service records form (was required alongside the medal entitlement) - when I posted it I included his death certificate as well as a copy of his photo. Again I don't really know anything about his WWII service, so a few of the fields were left blank in the form. I'm fortunate that my great grandfather wrote memoirs of his experience during WWI, so I know quite a bit about his service during that time.
I just noticed in the OP I put British War Medal - It was actually the Defence Medal that I applied for (oops)
Next question I suppose is - did you send the forms off to the medal department or the Army Personnel Centre at Glasgow? If you sent the forms to Glasgow with your £30 cheque can you say when you sent them, if its been a while (a few months) then I would suggest phoning them TD
Therefore that will provide you with details of his medals. If you read the forms above to obtain his official service records you need to fill in the forms and apply to Army Personnel Centre Support P & D Branch Historical Disclosures MP 555, Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street Glasgow G2 8EX as its states on part 2 of the forms on this link Request Home Guard service records TD
Thanks, that makes more sense - I'm unsure why the medal office wanted the Home Guard service record form as well... I'll fill it out again and will send it to the Army Personnel Centre. Thanks again for the help!
They need the form so they can check his service records (in Glasgow) to verify which medals he would have been awarded, but they are ONLY the medal office TD
