commendation Pictures: Rhine River Crossing - 79th. Infantry Division My dad was Company Commander of the 187th Combat Engineers (US Army). I was curious if anyone had any first hand information on this action. Rick Daniel
"The Last Offensive," by Charles B. McDonald, is the official US Army history of the campaign. The Army's official histories on the Corps of Engineers will help, too. Both are available on CD/ROM, believe it or not. Our thanks for your father's service to his country.
No, unfortunately my dad refused to talk about the war. I do have all of his letters home which my mother saved. Being an avid Bama fan I was particularly pleased to find a picture that he mailed home of he and LTC Wallace Wade (Duke University coach who coached at Bama in 26-7) in their war gear. He stated in the letter that they get together on the weekends for supper and discuss Alabama and Duke football. All that I know of my dad is from his records, scrap books, papers, and letters. I also remember a piece of schrapnel in his arm that seemed to travel alot.
