Hi, I have started work on researching 120 bank officials from the Ulster Bank in Northern Ireland / Ireland who served in WW2.

http://ulsterbankwarmemorials.blogspot.co.uk/ (work in progress with daily postings)

All I have to start with is the name on the Roll of Honour and using Google, London Gazette, 1911 Irish Census and some local websites, I want to find out what other sites are worth subscribing to?

Can users recommend any sites for this type of bulk research?

    Thank you.

    note...

The last post on the thread was from Von Poop

"WW2Talk continues to have no connection to that website.

We're also now choosing to ban all discussion of them here, as the Owner's response to questions posted on a now-removed thread on which they invited queries, was eventually an accusation of libel.

Sorry chaps, not our usual friendly style, but any further references to them will be deleted."

Well, not mentioned, but presumably known to you are the CWGC database http://www.cwgc.org/
You can search by specific location, street etc using the Additional Information field.

If you (or a colleague) subscribe to various Family History websites, such as Ancestry, you can also look for the UK Army Roll of Honour for extra information on soldiers (not airmen or sailors). Or use your local library for free access.

Ultimately, whatever family history website you choose, it's know the wrinkles of each that will get you the best results. The one mentioned does have alot of records available, but needs the perseverance of a saint sometimes! FMP may be more user friendly for the inexperienced and you may become more expert quickly, but whether it has the range of records might be a weakness.

The same with the London Gazette, where the Search Engine is as arcane as the Stig, but can be tamed, in time.

Ross has his own site (guess the name!) which can be invaluable for RAF etc questions.

You say your project is for WW2. The 1911 Census might not be too helpful as many would have been born after 1911.

Appeals in the local press and radio may produce more Names than on the Roll of Honour, as would a dedicated trawl through local newspaper archives.

It's a lot of effort but no doubt you'll think it worth it when you complete the final entry (only to have someone come along with a new Name!

    Good luck!

I second this - ask away!

Also it may be best to stay away from pay sites if you are planning to republish (even if it is for free) because you could land yourself in hot water.

What you have done so far looks great though and it is great that you have acknowledged sources. Well done.
