During the 1947 cricket season Whitehaven Cricket Club (Cumberland) dedicated a memorial plaque to the memory of six former Whitehaven cricketers who made the supreme sacrifice during the 1939-1945 war: George Allen (RAFVR), Robert Brady (RAFVR), Harold Todhunter (RAFVR), William Vincent Edmondson (RAFVR), John Joseph Mean (KORR) and Raymond Francis Calderhead (RAFVR). This plaque was later destroyed when the clubhouse burnt down.

In 2019 the club made plans to replace its lost memorial but this time to include the names of six former Whitehaven cricketers who made the supreme sacrifice between 1914 and 1919 (all army): Claude Leslie Blair MC, Robert Curwen Richmond Blair EM DSO, Robert Coventry Blair, Arthur M.M. Robertson-Walker, John Flynn and John Martindale Hall. Originally, it had been planned to dedicate this new memorial on the 75th anniversary of V.E. Day (8th May 2020) which was also close to the centenary date of the Versailles Peace Treaty which marked the end of the 1914-1919 world war. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, lockdowns and restrictions the original planned date for unveiling the memorial was inevitably postponed. Eventually, on the morning of Saturday 13 November 2021 the new Whitehaven Cricket Club war memorial was dedicated in at the clubhouse. The club's former players who lost their lives during the two world wars will always be remembered and honoured.

The attached photographs were taken during this service of dedication.
