Repatriation shipping from SEAC 1945

Hi all,

In short, i'd like to know if anyone can work out which ship my grandfather returned from the south east asian theatre from in 1945. His service records show he "embarked at Bombay for UK" on 06/08/1945 and a note which says "Disembarked in UK 29/08/45"

I have noticed a stamp in his service records which seems to suggest he was in Southampton area

Would anyone happen to know which ships calling at Bombay and collecting troops around 06/08/45 may have arrived in Southampton around 29/08/45? He's not on any passenger lists on findmypast.

If I am reading this correctly (I wouldn't guarantee it) the SIBAJAK left Bombay 8/8/45 and arrived Southampton 29/8/45. I will say that embarkation date is not the same as sailing date.

There are lists on FMP, what was his name?

 

I used findmypast to pull lists of civilians arriving in Southampton from Bombay in 1945, and after i'd clicked on about 100 odd records I found a ship that arrived southampton 29/08, and it was Sibajak. Had no idea if it had troops on it, as i imagine they only recorded civvys on those lists. Therefore its great that you have arrived at same conclusion. I have just pulled the movement record for Sibajak from the national archives and it has her arriving Bombay 02/08/45, so my grandads embarkation on 6th would fit. She then goes to Suez on 18th, Port Said on 19th, and finally Southampton on 29th.

I had a little go on the Arnold Hague Database, and yes it does look like Sibajak is the only ship that it could have feasibly been. My dad will be thrilled about this, he's been wondering about this for years.

Grandad embarked for India 05/01/1942 on RMS Strathmore - 1332 days without seeing home.
