Private Brant served with the 4th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment, 150th Infantry Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division.

on the 15 February 1942 the 150th Infantry Brigade moved north to take over from the Free French, who relocated to Bir Hacheim. The 4th East Yorks were sandwiched between the 5th Bn Green Howards at Bir Naghia and the 4th Bn Green Howards at Alem Hamza, in what became known as the Gazala line; actually boxes.

At this time the 50th (Northumbrian) Division was the only British Division in contact with the enemy anywhere in the world.

This was the period of lull prior to the Axis assault on the Gazala line, in late May 1942, that eventually led to the withdrawal of British and Commonwealth forces to the Alamein line. Action at this time was limited to patrolling and the usual periodic ‘hate’ stonks from the opposing artillery.

Although it is not known what specifically happened to Private Brant, it is likely that he was either injured whilst patrolling or by desultory artillery fire, or was the victim of an accident or illness; and given his place of burial he probably later died of his injuries/illness whilst in hospital in Alexandria.

RIP Private William H Brant :poppy:

    Best,

    Steve.
