Hi I am trying to find the location of the cemetery in Popham. i've looked on the google map location on the CWGC website, and all i see is a enclosure at the end of a path. can you tell me if this is the right location, as i see no sign of a church. All the best Rob
It would seem that St Catherine’s Church has long disappeared, but old maps show that the church was located in the position identified by the CWGC. The CWGC photo of the cemetery looks nothing like the plot of land on satellite maps and in any case there are supposedly only two graves there. I have found a photo of the cemetery gates and I assume this is at the end of the lane – but it looks an empty derelict site, except – is that a CWGC style grave behind the ‘Y’ of cemetery? http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HAM/Popham/StCatherine It would seem that the twgpp have found the location: Photograph of the final resting place of Clarke, Arthur - The War Graves Photographic Project Perhaps someone here lives nearby and could help.
Hi Many thanks for your help i will be stopping by in the next couple of weeks hopefully, and will see if the location is right. All the very best Rob
I have been intrigued by your question, and one issue that puzzles me is the lack of information as to when the church was demolished, especially in view of the two WW2 burials. Did a search for the availability of Parish Registers and these would appear to end at the following dates: Baptisms 1942 / Marriages 1942 / Burials 1979 From the map you will have guessed that the village, and perhaps the church itself, was decimated by building the A33 and M3. There is a great before and after view here (a good site for old maps): http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=17&lat=51.1911&lon=-1.2057&layers=168&right=BingHyb The image of the gates looks as if they are chained, so you may want to contact someone beforehand for access. Also if you look at Google street view for the track to the south off the A33 there seems to be a gate across it. Limbo dancers and parking OK though. There appears to be a pedestrian footbridge over the M3 just to the north and access may be off Popham Court Lane. As your query was posted on the Recce forum I assume you are interested in Arthur Clarke. Although the CWGC site has his family located in Popham I can find no trace of them in either the 1911 census or 1939 Register. The Army Roll of Honour gives him as Tower Hamlets Rifles (Recce) and his birthplace as East London. Will be interested to hear how you get on.
Hi Tony My interest in this site is to photograph the war graves as thats what i do in my spare time. I drive from Devon to London Quite regularly and stop in 1 or 2 spots every journey. I went to the directions given on the CWGC website and could not find the cemetery so it sparked my interest. Thanks for the link for the maps what a cracking bit of kit. Will let you know how i get on and will post the pictures All the best Rob
