Wizards. Does anyone out there know the number of the RASC company or companies in 78 British Infantry Division? Regards Frank
I posted this some while ago, although I can't find it at the moment, so here it is again - some RASC units mentioned in the OOB. 78th Victory Parade.pdf
Attached is a page from the diary for the 78th Division RASC headquaters July to December 43. PM me if you would like the remainder.
I'll add them to a post in the thread to make them searchable. RASC units in 78 Battleaxe Division 57 Coy RASC 127 Coy RASC 294 Coy RASC 328 Coy RASC I've also printed off page 4 from the pdf that Tony added & put it in ''Algiers to Austria'' the 78 Div history.
Post #6 above from ‘hutt’ prompted me to have a quick look through the 56 Recce diaries as they contain various copies of 78 Division’s Operational Orders etc. Frank, not sure if you are looking for a particular unit or a particular date, and I am certainly not claiming that I have caught all references, but you may be interested in the following extracts. They do reveal units not mentioned above. If you need more information or want to put them in context you can get more details in Recce Mitch’s post:- http://ww2talk.com/index.php?threads/56th-recce-war-diary.37844/ P1990349 78 Div Operational Order dated 1 Feb 1943 138 Bde RASC Coy P1990520 78 Div Operational Memorandum No 1 dated 6 Mar 1943 78 Div Tps Coy RASC 11 Inf Bde Coy RASC 36 Inf Bde Coy RASC 56 Hy Regt Pl RASC P1990611 78 Div Admin Order No 18 dated 19 Apr 1943 328 Div Tps Coy RASC 237 Inf Bde Coy RASC 57 Inf Bde Coy RASC 294 Inf Bde Coy RASC P2170510 78 Div Operational Order No 14 29 Jan 1944 As above P2170590 78 Div Operation Order No 15 dated 15 Feb 1944 As above P2170599 78 Div Warning Order dated 14 Feb 1944 As above P2250528 78 Div Admin Order No 37 dated 5 Feb 1945 57 Coy RASC (Inf Bde) 294 Coy RASC (Inf Bde) 328 Coy RASC (Inf Div Tps) 237 Coy RASC (Inf Bde) P2250959 78 Div Movement Order dated 29 Apr 1945 One Coy RASC 925 Coy RASC less Rfts Pl RASC Remainder 925 Coy RASC P2280573 & P2280574 78 Div Outline Order of Battle No 4 dated 8 May 1945 – have included this for interest as, assuming it is a complete OOB, shows no RASC.
Good evening. I've just joined after finding this thread and taking a look at the docs posted. I live in Carinthia, Austria, A local Austrian military historian and I are researching the RASC presence here in the immediate post-war months, particularly in and around Millstatt, and these documents are extremely useful. I have another document on my reading list for my next visit to The National Archives: WO 204/8282 - History of the Divisional RASC companies of 78 Inf Div (Jan 1945 - July 1946) History of the Divisional Royal Army Service Corps companies | The National Archives Has anybody ever viewed this document? We'd also be interested in finding an officers list of HQ 78 Division from the same period, if such a thing exists. Thanks, and best regards from Klagenfurt, Carinthia. Paul
Paul. If you get hold of Gary Tankard on this site - look him up under the ‘Members’ tab, he will get you what you need from the National Archives. He is also inexpensive. Regards Frank
