First time poster, long term lurker…… I have my grandads WW2 RAOC service records and need help with the abbreviations please. Can someone take a look?

All we know is that he was in North Africa and mentioned Anzio, Italy. He said he was the Colonels Batman. He met with a few scrapes (of his own making), one being that he spent the night with ‘Anna’ and was late back, causing him and the Colonel to miss a ship to Naples. That ship sank, and the Colonel said my grandad, in effect, saved their lives……… I’m naturally sceptical about this but it’s a good yarn either way.

Can I just extend my thanks to this forum who have helped me with my other grandad (without any of you knowing) as I managed to put his service together by reading previous posts and resources. It would be great if you could add some detail to my RAOC grandad. Believe me, I’ve had a good try!

Second time poster, long term lurker…… I have my grandads WW2 RAOC service records and need help with the abbreviations please. Can someone take a look? (I’ve previously posted in the RAOC forum with no success)

All we know is that he said he was in North Africa and mentioned Anzio, Italy, and was the Colonels Batman. I can make out 2nd Echelon and 63 Section, but no idea where this would be.

Can I just extend my thanks to this forum who have helped me with my other grandad (without any of you knowing) as I managed to put his full service together by reading previous posts and resources. It would be great if you could add some detail to my RAOC grandad. Believe me, I’ve had a good try!

Please add his full name and service number, that can often help. They cannot be searched on attachments.

See: WW2 Abbreviations and Acronyms | Researching the Lives and Records of WW2 Soldiers very useful normally, though it does not allow "copy and paste"

Never seen such a short record. Is that what the MoD or The National Archives (TNA) provided? Sometimes war records are found elsewhere.

His Service Number 14224035 shows he was enlisted in the General Service Corps, an all-arms initial assessment and fitting out formation which determined where you went. It started in mid-1942.

His partial record shows in date order:

4/4/1942 First mention - enlistment date probably
20/4/1943 Posted 5 Docks Group Royal Engineers
    28/4/1943 16 FAD possibly till 15/5/1943
5/10/1944 Posted to Line of Communications duties (not clear where, possibly in NW Europe)

Anyway that is a start, good luck.

Apols, can’t get the hang of replying but thank you

His full name was Walter Harland. 14229035.
I received 9 pages from National Archives/MOD a few weeks ago. The other pages are Medical records and 2 blanks, apart from his front joining up basic details page

YES!!! We couldn’t understand the 1976 part at all. None of us have any knowledge of this application when he would be 71 years old?
