The military records states that he has the following medals
    Africa Star with 8th Clasp
    War Medal 1939/1945
    1939/45 Star - Military Star
    France/Germany Star

Not sure what this means ? does anyone and can get copies of these medals

Hi there. I hope you find this helpful. Italy Star meant he served in the Italian War theatre from Sicily onwards. The second one is just a general one given to all personnel. Same for the 3rd one, 4th is another theatre one. If I'm wrong i'm sorry but ww2 medals is not my thing. I only know the basics for my two grandfathers.

    Hi,

The Africa star means he served in in the Africa campaign the 8th might mean the battalion or force he was attached too.
The 1939/45 star means he had served in the War.

The War Medal 1939/45 is for service all thought the war.

The France Germany Star is for landing at Normandy all the way thought to Germany before being Demobbed from Germany.

If he landed On D-Day or from days after ward he would have been issued THE OPERATION OVERLOARD MEDAL presented to him by the French people on the 50th Anniversary.

    Hi Big Allen,
Careful with those sweeping statements they are misleading;-

    The 8 signifies 8th Army
Overseas in the War. Not for home srvice
Any service in the qualifying periods
Service in North West Europe within the qualifying period
Commemorative medal issued originally by the Town of Caen later available to buy

CL1 gives a comprehensive link , this should help with qualifying criteria.

    Thanks :)

    Kyle
