Thanks Trux, your knowledge of these things is awesome! I think it's very likely that this was what my father was up to in Belgium, or at least some very similar activity.

    Thanks again.

    Phil,

I cannot tell a lie. I only knew about 5196 because Ted sent me information about it, after Danny Lovell sent me a picture of it.

Does anybody know the whereabouts (and hopefully availability!) of any WW2 Radar vehicles, Ops Room or Rotating aerial array or cheese "nodders"? Don't have to be operational though! A French organisation is hoping to mount an exhibition on Omaha Beach in June 2012 at the unveiling (after only 68 years) of a plaque to commemorate my mates of 15082GCI who were killed there on d-day:poppy:.

I don't hold out much hope, but any information would be greatly appreciated.

I noticed, Les, that you mentioned you were part of the 309 MSU in Brussels. I've just finished writing up my Father's diary and he mentioned that he joined up with the 309 on a couple of occasions from Sept 13th when he landed at Arromaches and then again on 24th October 1944 in (or near) Brussels. He was a WOM. A couple of abbreviations in his diary I can't find references to, such as BDS, LTTB, R&R, WFC and S&TC. Any ideas?
I've mapped out his journey through France into Belgium then Holland and finally to Hamburg including some of the Units they atatched to, so if anyone needs that sort of information for their investigations then let me know. Similarly I've got about 6 to 8 photos of him and his mates stasnding by their trucks.
Any answers to the abbreviations would be much appreciated.

    BDS. Bomb Disposal Section.
    R&R. Refuelling and Rearming.
    S&TC. Supply and Transport Column.

I don't recognise the others. The context would probably help.

Just stumbled on the attached on the tinternet: AMES 9 must have been succeeded by our previously mentioned MRI type 5916.

    Ted,

I think that the two radars existed simultaneously. Radars were the same, being versions of Chain Home Low. 5*** series were for use overseas and 9*** were for use at home as emergency replacements for the static Chain Home Low stations.

Those wooden sectional masts were apparently difficult to handle. The same masts were used for Mobile Gee and Gee H. One unit erected two such masts. The first took six days altogether when the wind caught it as it was being hoisted. The bottom two sections were damaged and had to be repaired. The second mast took only three days. Mobile is obviously a relative concept.

    84 Group Order of Battle

These three pages detail the OOB for 84 Gp during Operation OVERLORD. Page two shows the numbers of different MSUs although not their individual Group identity.

Looks to be a Brockhouse mk2, look to the chassis frame ends, and they are "c channel" to the inside.

Not sure if this conversation is still live but I wonder if anyone has or knows of a comprehensive list of the makeup of the different MSU types. My father landed in France in August 44 as a radio operator with what I think was a Type H MSU. ( his record refers to 5115 H Unit)

My grandad is in this picture, a seargent on the back row smoking. It says in the history i aquired from the RAF that he disembarked for the continent on the 24/06/1944. Don't know if thats of any use to you and our vehicle history. Incidently there is a much higher quality image (the same image but higher def) on wikimedia commons. I am now going to trawl through this thread to see if there are any other pictures of him. Thanks folks.

MIKE et al it seems a long time since we added anything to this thread Have a look here its just like Christmas. See second post on the thread and download the DROPBOX file ::::

RAF Austin K6 Signals 3 Ton Lorry

With thanks to Bryan who shared it on HMVF.
It also clarifies the A & B suffixs after RVT numbers we had been led to believe it was differentiate between prime mover and trailer mounted' It is in fact to state the exact equipment carried.
