    EmpireUmpire .........

    Hello all,

This abbreviation appears on my Grandfathers service record in 1933. He was posted from "S of P" to unknown. If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

    Kind regards

    Hi all,

And to give some further context. Perhaps some kind soul might be able to help with a couple more -

    - S of P
    - 2 FTS (A) - I assume 2 Flying Training School, does the (A) mean anything?

    Kind regards,
    Emps

    What was his trade?

    Hi Ross,

He enlisted 1923 and served from 1924-30 in Iraq, Palestine and Kurdistan as a Gunner / Fitter in various Armoured Car Coys. During the Second World War his designated trade was a Fitter Aero Engines / Fitter 2E (Engines) - he undertook a number of courses at on Bristol Aero Engines, Carburettors at Claudel Hobson and at Ford.

He had a very diverse career and if you wouldn't mind, could I send you a transcript of his record to look at to see if I have missed anything?

    Cheers

At that era S of P usually stood for School of Photography based at Farnborough but this does not gel with the trades you mention.

However neither do the trades fit with Air HQ, and HQ postings.

I wonder if he was being used more as an Admin Driver M/T or Mechanic M/T role rather than Gunner/Fitter.

    Hi Ross,

Good points, though I am not sure what to say. He passed his Gunnery Course Armoured Car Crew on the 07/10/1924 and his CTTB Fitter Course at Kirkuk on the 26/03/1925.

An interesting point to note is that from the 14/07/1939 - 03/02/1941, during the Blitz, he was with No.1 Balloon Centre at RAF Kidbrooke. Again, a strange posting as he next moves on to 11 OTU where he was certainly working as a Fitter Aero Engines.

    Cheers
