    From Irish Guards Journal, 1959:

R.S.M. Arthur Frederick SMITH, MBE, died at his home, 159 Picardy Road, Belvedere, Kent, in his 62nd year, on 11th April, 1958.

He joined the Regiment in 1915 and spent the greater part of his life in its service. Despite severe bomb wounds (he lost an eye whilst on duty when the Guards’ Chapel was destroyed by enemy action) he gave invaluable service until discharged to pension in 1946.

Affectionately known as ‘Gyppo’ he will be remembered by many as Superintending Clerk at Regimental Headquarters during the difficult war years. Always the willing co-operator and tireless worker nothing was too much trouble for ‘Gyppo’. He had a most endearing nature. Junior Ranks found the ‘Auld Toff’ easy to approach and the one person with whom to share troubles.

A favourite saying of his was ‘Don’t worry, given time it will sort itself out’ and sure enough it would. He was a good humoured loveable character. A grand person to know and a great Irish Guardsman.

Many of his friends attended the funeral and many more who were unable to attend sent flowers.

Our thoughts go to his widow and family in their great loss.
