Hi people, My grandfather served during WW2 in the 92nd Field Regiment Royal Artillery. I am presuming that this means during his time as part of the B.E.F his regiment formed part of the 50th Northumbrian Infantry Division. Or could it be that I am barking up completely the wrong tree. In the long run I hope to track his entire progress during the war but for now I'm starting at the beginning. His time in the in the B.E.F. This is due to him being awarded the "Military Medal" during this time. But we don't know the reason for this. The medal itself was not with the others when he died we only learned it when my aunt applied for a copy of his service history. Sorry for the long winded question. Dodger
Hello and welcome to the forum. Perhaps I maybe of some assistance ... Whilst I look up that unit in my BEF Orbat can you post his full name? I maybe able to post the original MM citation for you. BRB Andy
Dodger, Hello and welcome to the forum. Andy is on the case and you should get a good result knowing his work. Several RA experts will soon be contacting you when they read your post. Regards Tom
Were under 50th Division at the date above. They had 24 x 25 Pounder Field Guns and the regiment consisted of 35 officers and 540 other ranks. The 92nd Field Regt joined 50 Div on 7th May to help bring them up to a 3 Brigade Division. A couple of notable events: 365th Bty of the Regiment supported 8 DLI and 7 RTR, 368th Bty of the Regiment supported 6 DLI and 4 RTR at Arras on the 21st May. On the 27th May the Regiment was supporting 6, 8 and 9 DLI in the Ypres area, namely the Boesinghe Canal. 30th May the regiment was in action again supporting 151 Bde on the Dunkirk perimeter, defending a section of the Bergues/Furnes Canal from the bridge at Nieuporthoek to the French/Belgium frontier. They were supporting 6, 8, 9 DLI and 3 Gren Grds. Regards Andy Philson's 1940 BEF Order of Battle Vol's 2,4 and 5.
Noob? There are no noobs here, we're like the Confederate Air Force, we're all full Colonels here (although a few are fuller than others) Welcome!
Welcome to the forum Dodger! The Orbat for the 92nd Field Regiment, RA, shows it mainly attached to the 5th Infantry Division in WWII, as follows: 28-Dec-1939 to 30-Apr-1940 and 06-Jun-1940 to 28-Jun-1945. But it looks like it was detached from 5th Division during the BEF fighting - 10th May to 2nd June 1940. During the Arras counter-attack by Frankforce, the CO of the 5th Infantry Divison, General Franklyn, allocated a lot of the 5th Divisions, Divisional Troops to support 50th Division's Infantry and vice versa. So, my uncle, who was in the 72nd Field Regiment, RA, found himself in Arras supporting the 5th Division, etc. Best, Steve.

Wow, thank you very much Mr Moose much more than I'd hoped. My weeks worth of searching had got me the page in the London Gazette! Really thank you very much for your time and for the images of the commendation. Robin
No worries , it was fun looking them up. Next thing is for you to get the 92 Fd Regt war diary . Couple of members can get you that from Kew for a small fee. Andy aka Drew may already have it on file. WO 167/501 92 Field Regiment Royal Artillery Covering dates1939 Sept.-1940 June Link to National Archives here
Hi, The link for the digital copy of that files appears to be broken at the moment, so I'll have to try again on Monday. Failing that I'll ring them, given I'm in Scotland and have no plans to go to London anytime soon I'm hoping they will be able to provide a digital copy of them. Mr. Moose, thank you very much for all the looking up that you have done, it's far more than I could have hoped for especially on a Saturday night so have an E-beer and a pat on the back from me. Robin
NO dont order them from Kew , it's too expensive. Andy or another member called Lee, aka psy.war can do them cheaper. They are trustworth & relaible.
Those citations would have been earned during the withdrawal from the Dunkirk perimeter. If you want an idea on what the fighting was like along the canal have a look at the link below-I travelled/walked most of it a couple of years ago. Walking in the Footsteps of the British Expeditionary Force 2008 to 2009 I must go back sometime with a bike Cheers Andy
