    Hello everyone;

After a wait of over a year, I received my Grandfather's records and am happy to have them. I've got endless questions from looking at them and was-as usual- hoping that someone on here could help:

    - It seems he lied about his age- his date of birth appears as 2/2/1917 on some records (though not on the latest one) though it was actually 2/21920. Why would someone need to do this if they were over 18 anyway?

    - The 'courses attended' part of his records says "Special Training-1940-Inverailort-Q.I". He would have been still with the DWR at this time, what does Q.I. mean? What would have been going on there in 1940?

    - From July '41 to Jan '42 he was with '46 Recce, which I wasn't aware of. I don't suppose that anyone has any '46 Recce photos?

    - Post war he was in Germany, back with the DWR as part of "100 Field Security Section". I don't know what this was and the internet-so far- is not much help. Any suggestions welcome.

Ok, three questions is enough. I hope everyone is having a good day.

    Hi Ethan
Would you care to scan all the records please so we can look at the details. It would be better for members to see them and answer your queries.

That's a good suggestion Leslie, I don't have a scanner (I've been meaning to scan those Peter Taylor pictures for weeks) but might be able to do some tonight. Regards.

What Bn(s) of the Dukes was he with and what are the dates?

These are the 46 Recce diaries covering your mans time with them:

    WO 166/558 46 Recce 1941 July-Dec.
    WO 166/6293 46 Recce 1942 Jan.- Dec.

    Cheers

    It says here:

    'Joined 2/7th Bn. DWR 17.2.40'

    Then:

'proceeding to 46. Div. Details Bn. 27.4.40'

He was back in the Dukes post-war, his father's regiment.

So he would have gone to France in 1940 then? Have a search in the 1940 section I've posted some stuff on the unit during this time.

There still looks like there's gaps though. The best thing to do is list the unit(s) and dates like this:

    2/7 Dukes 17/2/1940

    46 Recce 1/07/941

    2/7 Dukes 01/01/1942

    Etc etc etc...

No, he never went to France. He was in hospital in Huddersfield when the regiment went to France, and two of his best school friends were apparently killed there. He wrote a short article about it which -when I can get near a scanner- I'll post in the 1940 section.
