QUARTERLY HISTORICAL REPORT of the 1st Battalion IRISH GUARDS for the Quarter Ending 31st March 1947.

3. HOW EMPLOYED
Duties whilst in LONDON consist of King's Guard, and all Public Duties, plus London District Guards, fatigues etc.
Training confined to individual courses.
Duties at PIRBRIGHT were confined to Camp Guard.
Certain training was carried out under Platoon arrangements.
Remainder of time was taken up in preparation for embarkation.
During sea voyage, normal ship's routine carried out.
Battalion found ship's police and fatigues.
Training was confined to P.T. and Security lectures.
QUASSAISIN Camp. This being only a Transit Camp the Battalion had only one duty to find, this being Camp Guard.
ATHLIT and R.A.F. Camp. Here we came under the command of 3 PARA BRIGADE, 6 AIRBORNE DIVISION. Our duties consisting of two Camp Guards, and a Searchlight Guard. As yet we have no operational role.
Training: Weapon Training, range work, carrier and Company schemes, as well as Platoon exercises in daylight and darkness.
P.T. and Sports play a great part in our curriculum.
Battalion Drill Parades are held on the Football Field.
The Battalion is entirely dependant on itself for all forms of entertainment, which consist of film shows, a library, and other activities. Also weekly Signal Exercises are being run for Officers

This was the day of the Meat Strike and owing to the lack of manpower the Battalion was moved to PIRBRIGHT so that a GRENADIER GUARDS Battalion could take over the abnormal duties of transporting meat to retailers.

Captain J.C. CREWE, M.C. assumes command and financial responsibility of Residue Company with effect from 17th January 1947.
The G.O.C. in C., British Army of the Rhine, is pleased to approve the award of Certificate of Good Service to 2717657 C.Q.M.S. DRURY.
Captain J.C. CREWE, M.C. is granted the powers of Detachment Commander with effect from 25th January 1947.
Battalion proceed on Embarkation Leave.

2722887 Lance-Sergeant GOLDEN is congratulated on winning his fight by a knock-out in the second round when fighting for the London District Team versus Home Counties at SHORNCLIFFE on the 14th February 1947.

1947 February 26
Battalion left FARNBOROUGH in two trains en-route for GLASGOW.

1947 February 27
Arrived GLASGOW midday, received by Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment and the Regimental Band who played us aboard the H.M.T. “CAMERONIA”.

1947 February 28
We weighed anchor at 0200 hours.
Morning found us at the mouth of the CLYDE still within sight of land.

 

1947 March 1
Sailing through the IRISH SEA, calm weather.
Normal ship’s duties.

1947 March 2
Off LAND’S END, steaming across to the BAY OF BISCAY, rain and slight swell experienced.
Ship’s Newspaper “Ocean Shamrock” started, Editors Lieutenant the Honourable A.I.G. BOYD and Lieutenant J.O. UDAL.

1947 March 3
Heavy swell crossing the BAY OF BISCAY, 50% of Battalion incapacitated by sea sickness.

1947 March 4
Passed through STRAITS OF GIBRALTAR.

1947 March 5
Sailing along coast of NORTH AFRICA, passed ALGIERS.
Weather fine and getting warmer.

1947 March 6
Normal ship’s routine.

1947 March 7
Normal ship’s routine.
Concert given in the evening by various members of troops aboard, organised by IRISH GUARDS.

1947 March 8
Normal ship’s routine.

1947 March 9
Docked at PORT SAID at approximately midnight.

1947 March 10
0900 hours Battalion disembarked from H.M.T. “Cameronia”.
Entrained for QUASSASIN Transit Camp at 1100 hours. Moved away from siding at 1400 hours.
Arrived at destination by 1800 hours.
Met by Advance Party at camp and installed in tents for the night.
Major A.N. BELL, M.C., and Captain (Quartermaster) J. KEATING M.B.E., left with an Advance Party for PALESTINE in the evening.

1947 March 11
Routine matters taken up.
Commanding Officer’s and Adjutant’s Orders held.
Battalion is busy cleaning up and drawing necessary accommodation stores.
Lecture by Camp Medical Officer on prevention of various diseases peculiar to climate.
Commanding Officer and Intelligence Officer leave for ATHLIT CAMP (PALESTINE) by air.
QUASSASIN Camp washed out by rain, many tents flooded.

1947 March 12
Ordinary routine carried out.
Lecture given by Lieutenant J.O. UDAL on Security with the Battalion.

1947 March 13
Battalion packs up again.
Left camp in evening in two parties for QUASSASIN Station.
Entrained and started journey at 0100 hours.

1947 March 14
Travelling on train all day through EGYPT and PALESTINE as far as LYDDA, where line was blown.
Finished journey to ATHLIT by truck a journey of approximately 70 miles.
Arrived about 2100 hours and settled in for the night.

1947 March 15
Battalion occupied in taking over the 2 camps allotted it.
Camps are 200 yards apart.
One is all canvas and occupied by H.Q. and Support Companies. It has an M.T. and Carrier Park.
The other is mostly huts, with some canvas, and is occupied by Battalion H.Q. and the remainder of the Battalion.
We now come under command of 3 PARA BRIGADE within 6 AIRBORNE DIVISION, but at present there is no operational role for us.

1947 March 16
Daily routine established.
Guards taken over from 3 PARA BATTALION. Rotas worked out whereby each Company is responsible for duties in turn.

1947 March 17
St. PATRICK’s DAY.
Battalion Parade in Football Field opposite camp. Shamrock was distributed by Commanding Officer.
The Officers afterwards entertained Brigadier F.D. ROME, D.S.O., BRIGADE Commander.
Officers versus Sergeants Football Match took place in the afternoon.
Companies spent the afternoon swimming off ATHLIT Beach.
Sergeants Mess continued celebrations far into the night.

1947 March 18
Greetings telegram from 3 PARA BRIGADE for St. PATRICK’s DAY.
Heavy baggage arrived at LYDDA Station, and was collected for distribution.

1947 March 19
Battalion transport drawn from M.T.
Piper BURNETT was caught by undercurrents off ATHLIT Beach and believed to be drowned. No trace of him could be found.
A practice alarm was held at 2200 hours.

1947 March 20
Inter-Company football matches and swimming.

1947 March 21
Commanding Officer’s Lecture and exercise with Company. Commanders on HAIFA Duties.
Court of Inquiry on Piper BURNETT’s disappearance.
First mail arrived from ENGLAND.

1947 March 22
Normal routine.
HAIFA placed out of bounds for one week owing to disturbances the previous night.
Telegram from 5 Company, IRISH GUARDS, “Best wishes for 17th.” All ranks 5 Company, IRISH GUARDS, ARMAGH, N. IRELAND.

1947 March 23
Memorial Service for Piper BURNETT in the open air, attended by the Battalion. The body has been recovered.

1947 March 24
Normal routine for the day.
Piper BURNETT’s Funeral Service attended by Officers and Other Ranks. He was buried in HAIFA Military Cemetery.

3. HOW EMPLOYED.
(a) ATHLIT Camp
Operation Duties. - Assist in the prevention of civil disturbance in HAIFA. Battalion actively committed April 15th - 17th.
Guards Duties. - Defence of two adjacent camps and a searchlight post.

Training. - Battalion Drill, Weapon Training, Range Firing, Platoon Exercises in locality of camp, Wireless Schemes, Rifle and Support Company marches away from camp.
Objects:-
(a) To make the men ft and accustomed to active service conditions.
(b) To enable the men to see the county and places of historical interest.
(c) To complete company and individual training.
(d) To show the flag.

Recreation. - Library, swimming, sports, football, hockey, cinema and visits to places of interest.


(b) KHASSA Camp
Operation Duties. - Maintenance of law and order in KHASSA Sector of 1st ARMD DIV. Operation of road blocks etc.

Guard Duties. - Guarding of camp area and those of neighbouring units.

Training. - Range firing for War Course of Rifle and Bren Gun. Battalion Drill, NCOs Cadre Courses, Weapon Training Courses, Platoon exercises in camp locality, Weapon Training, Battalion wireless schemes, company training in TRANSJORDAN for 3 weeks.

Recreation. - Battalion and Company cricket, Tug-of-War, Cinema, Library and Swimming.

The Battalion is now under the command of the 1st ARMOURED DIVISION.
Any outside duties are found by the Battalion.

Battalion tug-of-war team won against the LIFE GUARDS by two straight pulls.

1947 June 12
Detachment of Battalion with Lieutenant M.E.H. MULHOLLAND took part in parade in JERUSALEM on His Majesty’s Birthday.
Lieutenant ME.H. MULHOLLAND left the Battalion.

1947 June 13
Battalion is now under command of 61 LOR INFANTRY BRIGADE.
Battalion is guarding BRIGADE H.Q. Company. Companies still go to the Ranges every day.
Hockey match between the Battalion and the LIFE GUARDS. Result:- a draw.
Company cricket.

1947 June 14
Sergeants of the Battalion played Sergeants of the COLDSTREAM GUARDS at cricket and lost.
A social evening was held in the Sergeants Mess and was a farewell party to C.S.M. PESTELL and Sergeant GRAY who leave to join the 1st GUARDS PARA Battalion.
Tug-of-war team left for HAIFA with football team to compete against 3rd PARA Battalion.
LAGONDA Road Block was mounted by the Battalion for the first time.

1947 June 15
Swimming has been stopped owing to the shortage of transport.
Return table tennis match with 9th LANCERS. Battalion lost.

1947 June 16
First draft arrived in the Battalion under the Command of Captain P.A. McCALL. With them were Captain J.A. AYLMER, Lieutenant A.P. HARRAGIN, 2/Lieutenant J.A. SWIRE, Drill Sergeant JOHNSON and 60 Other Ranks.
Tug-of-war team won but the football team lost against the 3rd PARA Battalion. The 3rd PARA Battalion were the champions of the Tug-of-war in MELP, in 1946.
Weekly Battalion Welfare Meeting.
C.S.M. RITCHIE recalled to ENGLAND.

1947 June 17
G.O.C. PALESTINE, Lieutenant General MacMILLAN, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., M.C. visited Battalion.
Advance Party of ROYAL SUSSEX arrived in the next camp.
Normal routine.

1947 June 18
Captain P.A. McCALL assumed command of No. 4 Company while Captain D.A. LAMBERT has been transferred to BRIGADE H.Q. as G.S.O. III.
Battalion takes part in BRIGADE Signal Scheme.

1947 June 19
Battalion lost to LIFE GUARDS at hockey 2-1.
Company cricket.
Commanding Officer visited the Ranges.

Battalion takes part in Signals training Scheme during the day.

1947 July 14
The Commanding Officer lectured all Officers on the probable future moves of the Battalion. It was learned that the 1st ARMOURED DIVISION was going to be disbanded.

1947 July 15
A farewell Drill Parade was held for the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel D.H. FITZGERALD, D.S.O.

1947 July 16
Lieutenant-Colonel D.H. FITZGERALD, D.S.O. left by air for ENGLAND to enter ROYAL NAVAL Staff College.
Major D.R.S. FITZGERALD assumes command of the Battalion.
Hockey match between 58 MRRA and 1st Battalion IRISH GUARDS.

1947 July 17
Final Inter-Platoon Football Competition played off.
The Administration Platoon beat No. 9 Platoon, No. 3 Company, by four goals to NIL. The cup was entered by the Commanding Officer.
Illegal Immigrant ship “President Warfield”, later known as the “Exodus 1947” was sighted off the coast. Battalion Stood To, and an O.P. was established at WADI SUKREIR, North of ISDUD.

1947 July 18
“Exodus 1947” came within 15 miles of the GAZA COAST, but was taken in hand by the ROYAL NAVY and escorted to HAIFA. The Battalion Stood Down.
It was learned that the Battalion was shortly moving to JERUSALEM. The training programme had been amended in consequence.

1947 July 19
Battalion tactical H.Q. reconnoitred future JERUSALEM base.
No. 2 Company arrived back from training in TRANSJORDAN.
The visit of No 3 Company has been necessarily cancelled.
The Battalion cricket team won against the LIFE GUARDS by 53 runs.

1947 July 20
Security State in the area is now Amber, and in JERUSALEM is read, as a result of countrywide renewal of terrorist activities.

1947 July 21
All ranks delighted with the prospect of going to JERUSALEM. Normal Routine. A night curfew imposed in JERUSALEM. No. 4 Company temporarily disbanded owing to shortage of manpower.

1947 July 22
Future BRIGADE Commander, Brigadier J.G. BEFORD-ROBERTS, Commanding 8th INFANTRY BRIGADE in JERUSALEM lectured to the Battalion on its role in JERUSALEM. Battalion Welfare Meeting.
Lieutenant-Colonel B.O.P. EUGSTER, D.S.O., M.C., arrived to take over command of the Battalion.

1947 July 23
Commanding Officer with Battalion ‘O’ Group, made a detailed recce of the Battalion’s two camps in JERUSALEM. One camp is at the Hospice of Notre Dame in the centre of the town, and is part of ‘C’ Security Zone. The other is on the Northern outskirts of the town and is known as Mount SCOPUS Camp.

1947 July 24
The Battalion spent the day packing up in preparation for the move to JERUSALEM.

1947 July 25
The Advance Party of No. 1 Company which will be stationed in the Hospice of Notre Dame, left for JERUSALEM.
Major J.W. BERRIDGE arrived to take up appointment of Adjutant.

1947 July 26
No. 1 Company, Intelligence Section and part of the Signal Platoon left for Notre Dame, JERUSALEM. No. 1 Company will be responsible for the safeguarding of ‘C’ Security Zone. The Intelligence Section will take over responsibility for the Zone Pass Office.
The sirens are sounding frequently.

1947 July 27
No. 1 Company spent the day settling in at Notre Dame.
In the evening a small convoy of three tonners returning to KHASSA were attack by thugs on the Western outskirts of JERUSALEM. A grenade was thrown at a three tonner, and the thugs opened up with sten guns. Guardsman RUDDY, No. 3 Company, was seriously wounded and died later in SARAFAND Hospital. Guardsman GOODWIN and Guardsman MACKEY were wounded. The sirens sounded immediately afterwards, but the thugs got away.

1947 July 28
Battalion less the rear party, travelled up from KHASSA to Mount SCOPUS.
Commanding Officer held an ‘O’ Group. No. 1 Company took over operational security of ‘C’ Zone from the 2nd Battalion OX AND BUCKS.
In the evening the Battalion put out a strong patrol, 2 Platoons, in the area of the attack on our three tonners, one hour before curfew. There were however no incidents.
Curfew was enforced from 1900 hours to 0500 hours by No. 3 Company.
A grenade was thrown at vehicles belonging to ‘D’ Company, 1st Battalion ROYAL SUSSEX, enforcing a road block in the SAN HEDRIYA area; it exploded harmlessly.
The Commanding Officer toured the Battalion area.
Except for sporadic firing and one explosion, there were no other incidents.
‘D’ Company 1st Battalion ROYAL SUSSEX is under command and is stationed at RAMALLAH.
Captain M.J. de R. RICHARDSON left for ENGLAND on demobilisation.

1947 July 29
The siren sounds at 0615 hours when a bomb was thrown at a Police truck in Jaffa Road. Security State is now “PURPLE”.
Death sentence carried out on three terrorists.
The Commanding Officer held another ‘O’ Group.
Curfew again in force.
Mine found by TROUT Road Block on JAFFA Road by ROMENA.

1947 July 30
Captain E.C. GROGAN became M.T. Officer. Lieutenant the Honourable A.I.G. BOYD became Liaison Officer 8th INFANTRY BRIGADE H.Q.
Several sirens, curfew again in force.

1947 July 31
A block search carried out in BEN YEHUDA Street by Support Company; nothing found.
Guardsman RUDDY was given military funeral in SARAFAND.
Curfew again in force.

1947 August 1
Support Company carried out another block search in the early morning in KING GEORGE V Avenue; nothing was found.
The STERN GANG attacked 1st ROYAL HAMPSHIRES posts in ‘’B’ Zone. The attack was very successfully repulsed.
The G.O.C. PALESTINE visited the Battalion.
The Battalion finds a Lightning Platoon which is always at immediate notice at NOTRE DAME when the sirens sound.
Battalion H.Q. moves from MOUNT SCOPUS to NOTRE DAME.

1947 August 2
The Battalion carried out a search of the Jewish settlement of GIVAT SHAUL at 0400 hours. By 0545 hours all males were screened, and a large arms cache containing rifles and explosives were found. Four persons were detained.
The Battalion is now carrying out snap checks every day in the streets of JERUSALEM.

1947 August 3
A quiet day with no sirens.
Lieutenant M.C. ROBINSON found a car containing extraordinarily valuable HAGANA documents in North East outskirts of JERUSALEM whilst operating a snap check.
There are films every night a MOUNT SCOPUS.

1947 August 4
The house where on Saturday an ams cache was found was blown up by ROYAL ENGINEERS. No. 2 Company found the cordon.
A mine was discovered on the ROMENA Road Block on the evening by No. 1 Company. Police removed the mine. It was concealed under a pile of gravel, the normal post of a Bren gunner.

1947 August 5
Snap checks as usual.
The curfew is enforced regularly every night between 1900 and 0500 hours.
Lightning Patrol was called out when the Public Works Department building was blown up at 1400 hours by terrorists. Four British Constables were killed, and there were a number of casualties.

1947 August 6
A Block search was carried out but there was nothing found.
The tension is easing somewhat in JERUSALEM.
Curfew again as usual, carried out by a company.

1947 August 7
IZL [Irgun Zevai Leumi] pamphlets found by a curfew platoon.
Block search by No. 2 Company yields a box of gas capes.
No. 3 Company searched ROHAMA area in the early morning. 1 Top-Grade terrorist arrested.

1947 August 8
Snap check, arrested one man.
Small house search in Northern JERUSALEM found nothing.

1947 August 9
Security State is now “GREEN” and Guardsmen are now able to walk out in the In Bounds areas.

1947 August 10
Lieutenant M.N. GARNETT plays for the Army versus the RAF at the JERUSALEM Sports Club.
Several persons were detained for violating road curfew restrictions on the Western outskirts.
Visits have been organised to the historic churches in the Old City.

1947 August 11
Large search was carried out in the area of ZIKHRON MOSHE. The cell of a group leader in the IZL was discovered with black masks medical kit, literature, a list of pamphlets, addresses, IZL lantern slides, etc. Nine persons were detained out of 170 screened.

1947 August 12
Another search was carried out by Major FITZGERALD, Second-in-Command. In the BEIT YA’AGOV area, found nothing. 250 were screened but all were subsequently removed.
Lieutenant J.C. BRODIE operating road block in the evening near GIVAT SHAUL found a mine in one of the normal road block positions. ROYAL ENGINEERS detachment detonated the mine.
G.O.C.-in-C. MELF, General Sir John CROCKER, K.B.E., C.B., D.S.O., M.C. visited the Battalion in the afternoon.
At 2000 hours sirens sounded when a large number of shots were heard in the direction of Police H.Q. All clear sounded a half an hour later.

1947 August 13
BRIGADE Commander visited NOTRE DAME.
Welfare meeting held at MOUNT SCOPUS and NOTRE DAME.
Otherwise nothing of interest to report.
Curfew still being enforced.

1947 August 14
Night curfew on JERUSALEM lifted.
Road restrictions curfew continues.

1947 August 15
Search was carried out early in the morning in the area of GIVAT SHAUL commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel B.O.P. EUGSTER, D.S.O. M.C. 399 were screened and four detained. All were subsequently released after interrogation.
Now that there is no curfew in JERUSALEM a Phantom Patrol is carried out for two hours between the hours of 2200 and 0400 hours.

1947 August 16
Search was carried out at 0900 hours in the REHAVIA quarter. Nothing was found.

1947 August 17
RAMADAN ended last night and as a result the day was interspersed with the thump of cannon fire.
The flare up between Jews and Arabs in TEL AVIV had not affected JERUSALEM.

1947 August 18
Snap checks and road blocks continue to arrest various civilians not in possession of identity cards or otherwise appearing suspicious.
Films are now shown at NOTRE DAME.

1947 August 19
Nothing to report.
JERUSALEM is now undergoing a period of lull.

1947 August 20
In the early morning the Battalion searched the YEMIN MOSHE quarter of JERUSALEM. Very large arms cache believed to belong to the IZL containing 300 rifles, 400 grenades and other military equipment was found under a school. 14 persons were detained in connection with this discovery. Search ended at 0600 hours.
At 1000 hours a smaller search was made on information of a cement words in GIVAT SHAUL where there was a suspected arms cache. A very close search revealed nothing.
In the evening there was a siren followed by a gun battle in ZION Square and both the Phantom and Lightning Platoons moved there. The All Clear sounded just before midnight.

1947 August 21
Two sirens. The first was a boycott bomb in the area of ST. LOUIS WAY. The second was at 2245 hours following another gun battle at Police H.Q.

1947 August 22
Search was made in the evening of a house on YESHAYU Street on information that it was a meeting place of members of the STERN GANG. The probable room of such meetings, a Rabbi’s guest room was found by there was nothing incriminating in it.

1947 August 23
Sirens sounded in the evening following the explosion of a bomb in the EMPIRE CAFE. This bomb appears to have been thrown by Jewish Sabbath Day Observance Group.

1947 August 24
Lieutenant-Colonel D.N.L. GORDON-WATSON M.C. arrived to take over command of the Battalion.
Major B.O.P. EUGSTER, D.S.O., M.C. became Second-in-Command.
Major D.R.S. FITZGERALD relinquishes that post.

1947 August 25
50 Field Squadron, ROYAL ENGINEERS are now at RAMALLAH.
‘D’ Company ROYAL SUSSEX have moved down to MOUNT SCOPUS Camp.
The Battalion now operates 3 Road Blocks, TROUT on the Western outskirts; SALMON on the JERICHO Road, and ROACH in the area of SANHEDRIT.
55 Field Squadron are responsible for GRAYLING Road Block on the RAMALLAH Road.

1947 August 26
Large search carried out in the REHAVIA Quarter North of the previous search of 16th August. Nothing was found, 2 people were detained.

1947 August 27
Personnel of 58 Group left for PORT SAID this morning.
ENSA show in the evening at NOTRE DAME.
Siren at 1630 hours following an explosion in BEZALEL Street.

1947 August 28
Nothing to report.
Snap checks and Phantom patrols as usual.

1947 August 29
Another lull is on JERUSALEM and generally speaking order seems to be restored.
As a result there are greater opportunities for walking out.

1947 August 30
A number of persons were detained for breaking road restriction at the road blocks.

1947 August 31
Nothing to report.

 

1947 September 1
Large search carried out early in the morning by the Battalion, of the GEULA area. A large number of cess pits were discovered which appeared to have been renovated, with an eye to being turned into arms caches. Out of 275 screened, 7 persons were detained, 5 of whom were subsequently released.

1947 September 2
Normal routine, nothing to report.

1947 September 3
Major General Commanding the BRIGADE OF GUARDS, Major General J.C.O. MARRIOTT, C.V.O., C.B., D.S.O., M.C. visited the Battalion, and inspected NOTRE DAME and MOUNT SCOPUS Camps. In the morning he toured the Old City with the Commanding Officer.
Road blocks produced more persons for police custody.

1947 September 4
Battalion lost the cricket match against H.Q. 8th INFANTRY BRIGADE.
0430 hours Battalion searched the BUKHARIYA area. 400 persons were screened and 6 men and one girl detained. One man and one girl known members of the IZL. Subsequently released on licence.

1947 September 5
Platoon of No. 3 Company searched YEMIN MOSHE quarter in the morning. One revolver was found. The owner was subsequently arrested.

1947 September 6
Battalion entered a team for the South Palestine District Athletic Meeting Medley Relay race, which took second place.
At SARAFAND the Battalion entered for the Motor Cycle Championships. Guardsman UNSTEAD and Lance-Corporal COX of Support Company gained first and second places.
Tour of BETHLEHEM was arranged for Guardsmen.

1947 September 7
JERUSALEM remained very quiet and the last siren was on the 27th August. Interest is largely centred on HAMBURG and the Exodus immigrants.
The Lieutenant-Colonel of the Regiment Colonel J.O.E. VANDELEUR, D.S.O., arrived at the Battalion on a weeks visit.

1947 September 8
Regimental Lieutenant-Colonel accompanied by the Regimental Adjutant and Superintending Clerk visited both Battalion Camps.

1947 September 9
Intelligence Section found cellar of STERN Pamphlets off AGRIPPA’s Way. Owner of cellar arrested.

1947 September 10
Regimental Lieutenant-Colonel visited 1st GUARDS BRIGADE.

1947 September 11
Battalion searched the area of SHA’EVET TSEDEQ in the early morning. Nothing was found. 550 persons were screened. 10 were detained. Of these 9 were subsequently released. The tenth, MIZRAHI, turned out to be the leader of the JERUSALEM STERN GANG.

1947 September 12
Phantom patrol of ROYAL SUSSEX caught one Jew who bolted on being challenged in the REHAVIA quarter. Arrested Jew wanted for four armed robberies and in possession of two pistols.
Lieutenant-Colonel of the Regiment visited 6th AIRBORNE DIVISION.

1947 September 13
Nothing to report.

1947 September 14
First flight of 59 Group left for PORT SAID.
Usual church services, otherwise nothing to report.

1947 September 15
The sirens sounded in the evening. First the result of warning flares from GOVERNMENT HOUSE. The second a bomb in the REHAVIA quarter.

1947 September 16
Captain R.S. DALE, Second-in-Command of No. 1 Company left on demobilisation.
Sergeants Mess party in honour of Lieutenant-Colonel.
G.O.C. 1st ARMOURED DIVISION accompanied by Brigadier T. BRODIE Commanding 61 LOR INFANTRY BRIGADE visited the Battalion in the morning.

1947 September 17
In the early morning the Battalion searched the YEGIA KAPAYIM. One civilian was arrested having been found in possession of numerous STERN pamphlets. In all 220 were screened, 6 were detained.

1947 September 19
Large search carried out in the early morning in the BEIT YISRAEL quarter. Three arms caches were found. Twenty rifles, two mines, two flamethrowers, two Molotov cocktails, one revolver, one time bomb, grenades, detonators etc, were among the equipment found. Out of 400 persons screened ten persons were detained, two of whom were sent to LATRUN and four held awaiting charges.

1947 September 21
G.O.C. PALESTINE congratulated the Battalion on its performances in JERUSALEM. Commanding Officer congratulated all ranks on their outstanding success on recent searches, road blocks, and patrols.
Lieutenant M.N. GARNETT arrested eleven people when a loaded pistol was found during the night in a sack of chaff on the BIDDU road to the North West of JERUSALEM.

1947 September 22
Corporals and Guardsmen’s social evening held in the NAAFI at MOUNT SCOPUS.

1947 September 23
Large block search was carried out in the early morning in the SHAAREI PINNA - HAHALAT TSEVI - BEIT YISRAEL quarter. Out of 600 screened seven persons were detained for further interrogation. Nothing was found.

1947 September 24
Athletic meeting was held between the Battalion and Palestine Police in the afternoon at MOUNT SCOPUS. The Battalion won with a score of 63 points against 46.

1947 September 26
The BRIGADE Commander, Brigadier J.G. BEFORD-ROBERTS, paid a farewell visit to the Battalion at MOUNT SCOPUS. He addressed the Battalion on Parade and congratulated them on their great successes in the past two months in JERUSALEM.

1947 September 27
Sirens sounded just before 2000 hours and a bomb was thrown in the doorway of the SWEDISH Consulate. The Lightning Platoon Stood To, but was not called out.

1947 September 28
Normal Sunday Church services.
Battalion entered a team for the WELSH GUARDS Athletic meeting medley relay race which took first place.

1947 September 29
Flights ‘B’ and ‘C’ left for PORT SAID.
Lieutenant-General G.H.A. MacMILLAN, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., M.C. visited the Commanding Officer at NOTRE DAME.
The day was spent in packing up the kit in preparation for the return to KHASSA.

1947 September 30
Battalion left JERUSALEM for KHASSA and arrived there in time for lunch. The remainder of the day was spent in settling in.

Battalion busily engaged settling down after their return from JERUSALEM.

n the evening word was received that the Battalion was moving to GIVAT OLGA on the following morning, so once again Office kit and stores had to be packed.

1947 October 3
The Battalion consisting of No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 Companies, Battalion H.Q., Signal, Pioneers, and M.T. Platoons, left KHASSA this morning en route for GIVAT OLGA. On arrival work commenced on the installation of Offices, etc.

1947 October 4
This morning was spent on erecting tents which provided a welcome shelter from the glare of the sun. This was quickly done, and the afternoon was spent on the bathing beach which everybody looked forward to.
A lecture by the Commanding Officer outlining the future activities of the Battalion.
New draft consisting of 3 Officers and 91 Other Ranks arrived at KHASSA today.

A very quiet day, with all men clear of duty spending most of the day swimming from the beach.

Battalion composed of No.s 1 and 3 Companies, Pioneer Platoon, and Battalion H.Q. carried out a search of the NAHALIEL Quarter of HADERA this morning. No arms were found but were successful in finding 4 wanted men and 9 other suspects. A man was arrested after approximately 27,000 NAAFI cigarettes had been found in his house.

The Advance Party left for ROSH PINNA at 0630 hours this morning arriving at 1530 hours.
The camp which known as 210 Camp is being taken over from the TRANSJORDAN Frontier Force, who are withdrawing into TRANSJORDAN on and after the 15th of January 1948. The Camp is situated on a knoll overlooking Lake TIBERIAS and affording a splendid view of MOUNT HERMAN in SYRIA which is snow covered all the year around.

The following message was received rom Brigadier J. BRODIE Commanding 61st LOR. INFANTRY BRIGADE. “I wish to say how extremely sorry I am that you are leaving the BRIGADE, during your stay with us I have been much impressed with the way the whole battalion has set about any job it was given. I am sure you will be as successful in your new job as you were in JERUSALEM. Thank you for all that you have done. The best of Luck to you and I look forward to meeting you again."

1948 January 14
Normal daily routine.
The Battalion are engaged in striking tents and packing up, for their move to ROSH PINNA in the morning.

1948 January 15
The Battalion left for ROSH PINNA at 0630 hours arriving at 1600 hours, having stopped for lunch the other side of TULKARM.
On arrival the Battalion was split up. Battalion H.Q. being at Camp No. 10 and No.s 1, 2, 3 Companies occupying Camp No. 280/281 which is approximately one and a half miles from Camp 10. Stores and kit were quickly unloaded and as there were no tents to be put up the Battalion were free to settle down for the night in quite a short time.
The Battalion is now under Command of CRAFORCE for Ops and day to day Adm.

1948 January 16

No. 2 Company with a Mortar Platoon from Support Company took over duties from MIDDLESEX REGIMENT at SAFAD.

A regretful incident occurred this evening when two armed vehicles went out to recover a three ton lorry which had broken down at AR RAMA. The vehicles were fired on and one of the drivers Guardsman SHELDRAKE was fatally wounded and died on the way to B.M.H. HAIFA.

68 Group left for the Transit Camp HAIFA.
S/Sergeant KAVANAGH was returning to Camp for HAIFA on the TIBERIAS Road at LUBIYA. They jumped into a ditch and stopped there from approximately 2330 hours till 0630 hours. The Police rescued them.
