Posen - Stalag XX1D

    I bet he was 2/6 East Surrey's and was captured in June near Aumale - Just a hunch ;)
     
  2. Hi my grandfather was in posnen and im also trying to find out about his time there he was in the 7th battalion Norfolk and spent 5 years there im interested to hear what you managed to find out. my grandfather was Edward merritt.

    How do you know your grandfather was in Posnen - in the other thread you have started about him you say he was in Stalag VIII B.

    It might be worth keeping the questions about your grandfather together on one thread.

  4. I found an archive record online and found his name . Stalag v111b camp 21d posnen pow no 7518 and record office warwick.
    are these two different camps im confused.

    No they are the same camp but its name etc were changed plus there may have been satellite camps as well hence you can have Stalag VIII A, VIII B, VIII C see here - Stalag VIII - Google Search plus the town names changed from Polish to German and back so it is very confusing

    Part of Germany, Posen in Silesia and parts of it were ceded to Poland from the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.Overrun by Hitler's expansion into Poland in 1939 it was once again declared to be part of Germany.

    Defeat of the Third Reich in 1945 saw Poland reclaiming the territory with Posen becoming Polish under the name Poznan.

    Certainly confusing when looking up locations of war activities which were recorded in German during German occupation,then since the war end,Polish names had been adopted, as expected, when Poland reclaimed its territory.

    I have something for you pow.jpg this is my grandad POW, front row 2nd from right - caught after St Valery - Pioneers then TA, formerly Cameron Highlanders was in India - same name as me Peter Falconer
