Pilot Officer A. J. Claydon R.A.F. 72984

Discussion in 'War Cemeteries & War Memorial Research' started by Wolf-Pak-Zeta-001, Aug 27, 2021.

  1. There were two RAF fighter pilots killed in action on June 5, 1940 - Pilot Officer A. J. Claydon (72984) from 501 Squadron and Pilot Officer J. A. Shepherd (41621). Both pilots were buried in St. Sever Cemetery in Rouen. The crash sites for each pilot is not documented in their respective AIR 81 P.4. Casualty files.

Am trying to locate their respective crash sites. Any thoughts?

  3. Thank you for providing the links to the Aviation Safety Network webpages for both Claydon's and Shepherd's Hawker Hurricane crashes.

Pilot Officer A. J. Claydon's ASN webpage states that the crash was "near Le Mans, Sarthe, Pays de la Loire" and the AIR 81 reference is as you note "crashed near Rouen".

Looking on the map of France, there is quite a distance between the two cities of Le Mans and Rouen.

    Any thoughts?
