New place for tips, queries, and all out full restoration of those crumpled, stained & torn Military/Family photos.

First things first - if you want to upload photos, all the gen on how to do it is here:
    How to insert pictures

    Important:
If you only have one precious digital copy of a picture, make a copy of it first before uploading or sharing it - Keep the original in a safe place.

Photo restorers usually want large files, and decent quality scans. If you have bother uploading largish stuff (the forum can be quirky beyond a few meg), consider using Flickr, Photobucket, or other online photo hosts.

One more thing: This isn't going to be primarily about offering Pro services (though some that I've seen definitely have pro skills). I don't mind if some commercial services pop up and leave a post or two, but this needs to stay mostly amateur & friendly.

Maybe if you like the results from a friendly member, consider bunging a few quid to an appropriate military charity?

I'll now go and gather some threads.

Any chance of enlarging the photograph forum with a non-restoration then and now section? Or would that be pointless and distract from the main forum?

Also, I am available to add Telly Savalas ("Tellyvising" your image) to any ww2 related photographs free of charge, although I only work on Saturdays between the hours of 2 and 3 and need at least a few hours turn-around.

Hi is there anybody that can help with a photo I chanced upon but cannot enhance, I have the site address. if possible would love to see it enhanced. The site I found it on is http://pipesforfreedom.com/webtxt/0518%2011th.%20Royal%20Scots%20Fusiliers.htm and the photo is of a company of fusiliers and under the photo is written 'The Depot, Churchill Barracks, Ayr. The photo link is as follows http://pipesforfreedom.com/images/051812DepotRSF-Ayr.jpg The reason I would like it enhanced is that I am trying to find photos of my late father who died when I was a baby and he served with the RSF 2nd Battalion but did serve at the depot in Ayr. One of the fusiliers does look like a possible match which makes me think it may not be the 11th Battalion in the photo. Any assistance would be great. Thanks Andy

    Hi Andy,

There's a slightly better version as scanned from a recruitment brochure to be found here:

    http://southayrshirehistory.wordpress.com/2012/11/11/ayrshires-infantry-regiment-the-royal-scots-fusiliers/

Just click on it for the larger pic. The attachment added here has been cropped with a touch of contrast. Someone with better skills might be able to do more? The photo you pointed to could possibly be a post card. Otherwise you would need an original print for the best detail.

    Regards ...

Very old post I know but feel free to move if a more appropriate heading is available. This isnt offering a service paid or otherwise it`s just to highlight whats achievable with a bit of know how and time.

Yesterday I spoke with Verrieres regarding some newspaper images and I remarked at how it was a pity that the images contained in war time publications were of such a poor quality and in many instances the images in those newspapers may be the only surviving examples in regard to a particular man/casualty. Verrieres then told me it was possible `in some cases` to improve those images and he invited me to send a couple of examples through to him. This was the exact image I chose and sent him -

    So am I!
I'm sure I've got some photos that could do with the same treatment. If he'd want to have another go, feel free to have a try at attached file.

Not much of an improvement with the limited colour, contrast and light and dark settings on my edit with photos thingy.

I am assuming it is the faces you primarily want to enhance? I sent it through and he said that there was little left to enhance and if anything the faces may be distorted rather than enhanced ? Too much in the photograph would have to be rebuilt he said he doesn`t know enough about the restoration techniques and has only dabbled with news paper images. HIGHWOOD :- I mentioned you had converted his Sepia Girven to Black and White ? He removed the `Sepia` filter (whatever that means) and sent over this version

He clearly has a proper photo restoration app, I have only the standard photo edit thing. The quality that can be achieved with the right app is amazing.
