Rav4 Not sure if this site has been posted before but there are some very interesting memories here. British Pathe I can think of at least one such posting, link below, courtesy of Diane, but you are quite right in giving us a reminder of this fascinating website. Well worth a look ! http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/north-africa-med/34825-terry-ashwood-war-correspondent-pathe-news-cameraman-north-africa.html Ron
Good reminder Rav4, this site covers a wide range of material. I picked up some useful footage on several areas of my research.
I've always reckoned that if you have a completely open mind, you can learn something new every day. As I read this reminder of the Pathe News website, it set me wondering if there was a clip of Queen Salote at the Queen's coronation parade.................... brief pause while the younger members on this forum say "Who the bloody hell is/was Queen Salote ?" I hasten to explain: Queen Salote was the magnificent Queen of Tonga who rode in an open carriage, despite the rain and I was first to write about her here (see posting #15) http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/veteran-accounts/21973-dotting-%22i%22s.html Back to today's reminder of Pathe News.. The video extract of the coronation can be found here: THE CORONATION OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH - PART 2 - British Pathe and Queen Salote herself is 5 mtes 26 seconds into the clip. Just spend a few minutes looking at Queen Elizabeth II on that fateful day, see these wonderful images of a very young queen and join with me. I hope, in admiration of this remarkable woman who still rules today. Ron
I found several film reels on the Pathe web-site on the British in the Ardennes, which I did not see at the IWM archives during my last visit there. Wonder how that could have happened; are they seperately filed? It's a pity since my booklet on the Highland Division in the Ardennes 44/45, which was published some years ago, could have contained a lot more pictures. But I'm working right now on a re-issue. Does anyone know where to find these Pathe film reels at the IWM?
Don't forget this other footage site ... also a gem CriticalPast.com: Historic Stock Footage and Archival Video Clips and Photo Images from the 1890s to the 1990s They enable submissions for editing of descriptions. So if you spot something that's wrong or just omitted you can click a button and send a message. Think that's a great help for others who might be searching for keywords like units or vehicles etc but who fall foul of the censorship of the time. One for Ron, there are others not so brief. Dust cloud belches from Mount Vesuvius at Naples, Italy.
Rav4 I found the victory parade in London very interesting. Troops from just about every allied nation. You are quite right............... it was a bloody good show and I had a wonderful vantage point in Whitehall ! Ron BBC - WW2 People's War - Victory Celebrations, 8th June 1946
Thanks for reminding us of those sites, just spent ages looking at them and probably going to be late for work now!
I found the victory parade in London very interesting. Troops from just about every allied nation. Is it true that the Polish, who fought Nazi Germany from day one and had troops in every theatre, were not at the Berlin or London parades, 'cos they weren't invited
