Hi everyone, I am researching this soldier, for the Hope WW2 War Memorial, but although I have his Roll of Honour, saying he was born in Denbighshire and his residence was Shropshire, but I cannot find anything out about him, not in the 1939 National Register, nor in the North Wales BMD, so any help would be appreciated. Commonwealth War Graves Commission PRIVATE HECTOR PARRY Service Number: 4031973 Regiment & Unit/Ship - King's Shropshire Light Infantry - 1st Bn. Date of Death - Died 22 May 1940 Age 25 years old Buried or commemorated at DUNKIRK MEMORIAL Column 115. France Country of Service - United Kingdom DUNKIRK MEMORIAL I need to find out about his life and service, so he wont be forgotten, many thanks.
From his number he joined up pre April 1939 (a fair bit before I think) and I think Serving members of the Armed Forces weren't included in the 1939 Register (hopefully others can confirm)
Thank you AB64, I thought that that might be the case, but needed some confirmation which you have given me.
I can confirm that serving members of the armed forces already at barracks etc are not usually on the 1939 Register. They did not need the civilian ID card that were issued when the enumerators collected the forms from the householders, nor the civilian ration books that it was used to issue in Jan 1940 and the government did not need their details for future direction of labour etc. Often a great indicator that a man was TA, or a reservist is that he was on the 1939 electoral roll, but not on the register. The only exception I have seen is where a reservist or member of the Reserve of Officers had not yet been called back or remployed.
Thank you travers1940, the information is valuable to have, for my future research. I just wish I had 1 clue to his identity, there seems no trace anywhere. He must be remembered as a person who gave up so much for us all.
Further clues may emerge when the England & Wales 1921 Census is released, due early 2022 last I heard.
