Rather extensive photo archive with many ww2 related images:

Probably the best small starting point for the likes of us:
    Military Photograph Collection
But there are hundred's more tucked away in more obscure categories.

Large copyright free Photo Archive from the FDR Library & museum, mostly pure propaganda shots but some good stuff in there:

    One for Kuno:

Captions are often a bit odd so 'Browse' finds more stuff than 'search', many familiar, many not - well worth a shufti.

    'Eh' indeed.
As I said - the captions are a bit 'odd'.
Not unlike that Life shot with the 'Mustard gas attack on London' caption Drew posted.

Re; Back to the IWM photo collections, tried some time ago to find any pics of dads Regt for my history, but no luck nothing on them! But advised by a friend to try their Newsreel Film Collection, and lo and behold 3 -2min shots of the Regt in action + on the move with their Matador Towers in the Bocarge. Great stuff but expensive to get copies £80 for the 3-2min shots. Also watch the Copyright Laws from them, you can easily fall foul on publishing their stuff.

I also found 4 pieces of film which mentioned my Dad's unit at the IWM film archives. I then made an appointment to view them and only once I had seen them, decided it was well worth getting a DVD made. There was also other footage included of landing on the Normandy Beaches, the various Tanks used by the 79th Armoured Division. I also added some long footage on the Liberation of the Netherlands (celebrating, dropping food, dealing with collaborators, arrest of Senior Dutch Nazis, etc, etc) and also spent £80.

I did this 3 years ago and it was a worthwhile addition to my research and moving images of my dad's unit. Priceless I say.

    Regards - Rob.

The IWM Film Archive do a vastly reduced rate for Veterans.
I found that the video copies they do are not the best quality. See the Pathe Film Site for the same footage digitised. If it was on Pathe then you are better off ordering a copy from them. It is a shame the IWM do not do a deal with someone like Pathe to market their stuff.
Not a lot of people know about the Film Archive but basicaly the original of EVERY piece of UK Forces footage you have ever seen in any show/video/DVD is kept in the Film Section. Whilst you might see 5 or 6 seconds from a reel on a DVD the other 2 or 3 minutes lies unseen by all but those willing to go and visit.
A visit is easy to arrange, the fee in nominal and you get to watch as much as you want in a booth all on your own.
As the Film and still cameramen worked in pairs a lot of still images have a corresponding filmed record.
The search page is pretty complicated but keep at it. It gives a summary of the film content and once you get the hang of it the rewards are enormous.

I went to the photo archives a few years back searching for a particular photo of my grandfathers regiment that saw in a book and came out with half a dozen taken at the same time that i had no idea would be there. the archive is massive and has so many pictures that i think its only worth going if you know exactly what you are looking for or have the IWM number, its not a place for casual browsing! The reading rooms are also a fantastic resource but again you gotta know what you are after before you go. Also if you cant make it to the museum and want something from a book or personal account you can email them and ask one of their researchers to read through find the bits relavent to your particular interest and make a copy and send it to you, they are really helpful.

We don't seem to have had mention of the US Army Heritage collection:
    MHI

The search system's a bit clunky, but there looks like some promising results to be had with a bit of digging.
Can't yet work out how to display photographs or documents full size though .
Only way so far is to download the file through the main document search... it is a VERY odd search interface.

Seems to be turning up more unfamilar shots on searches I've done before...

Unless they've changed policy in recent years (unlikely) then no. You can visit their photograph library and look through the albums. Prints could be purchased directly from the original negatives at responsible prices.

I haven't been there in around six years so things could be different now. For example perhaps they now make digital prints from scans. That would be a shame as you can't beat a proper photographic print on bromide paper from an original negative. If I remember correctly a 7" x 5" print was around £5 - £7 which was very responsible at the time for a professional quality hand print.

I may be wrong, but it looks to me like IWM collections has put a lot more photographs online recently?
Might be worth a shufti to see if previous searches that drew a blank may now throw something up.
