I didn't think you could search for anything on this site?

Paul, you can 'advanced search' a bit although my French is not really good enough to look thoroughly.

I can't post a link to a search but if you go under recherche avance and then try place names like 'Dunkerque' or 'normandie' or even 'allemands' 1939 - 1945 then there are some interesting images.

Some of you may have noticed the IWM collections main page is currently offline.
Quick check shows this chap as the registrant of the .org now.
Possible that the main url still lies with IWM though, Lambeth registrant 'UK organisation'.

    Wonder what that's all about.
IWM forgotten to renew the domain?
    Someone's jumped in?

Who knows, hope it's back soon... I miss it.

Interesting, it looks like the nameservers for iwmcollections_dot_org_dot_uk were changed yesterday (26 April) and now points to a hosting company's holding page.

The main IWM website is still linking to the iwmcollections domain so it looks like it's an unintended change.

Part of the 'Life' archive is now searchable via Google.

LIFE photo archive hosted by Google

The search terms are causing me headaches at the moment as is a failure to bring up more than 200 images or to get the blind staggers with more general search terms...but there are some gems.

...and we do like wheeled armour, don't we chaps ?

Just popped in to share this with you all...

The entire Life photo archives are now available via google, simply end your google search with "source:life", bear in mind these archives are sorted into decade categories, so include 1930s or 1940s, or just go here; LIFE photo archive hosted by Google

Brings up some quite stunning stuff, including this colour shot of the Balham air raid of 1940, which most will only have seen before in Black & White.

Post up any stunning images you find.

Sorry Chad, Rich beat you to it ;).
Merged into this thread so all the better photo collections are easier to find.

It does look like a bloody marvellous resource though doesn't it, the style's interesting too - no matter how grim the content there's still an upbeat overall tone to the pictures.

And yes Rich, we do like Wheeled armour...

With regard to the Balham Air Raid photo, agreed, a stunning photo, but I would remind everyone that scenes like this were commonplace in wartime London every morning after the previous nightime's bombings.

Between 1940 and October 1942, the effort required just to get into my work-place in Bishopsgate was like tackling a minor assault course. With limitless ribbons of fire hoses blocking virtually every major road and still smoking rubble on almost every pavement the scene was a pure rehash of Dante's Inferno.

    Just a thought for today

Regards the IWM collection, I can do a search but when I click the thumbnail all I get is this.

Your current query has expired. Perform the search again.

    Anyone else having problems?
Or is my over use of the collection & I'm being blacklisted?

You and me both Owen. The trouble is that we still can't rule out over-use:)

It was certainly happening to me yesterday.

I hope they're not picking on me. I give them free publicity everywhere and I buy pictures from them.
