Peter, It's fascinating to hear from someone who can put a name to one of the faces and to add some more detail. Regrettably, we probably began this research too late but it has only really been made possible by the internet.

This series of photographs is quite extensive, including a number of close-ups of the troops. It may be that he appears elsewhere as well.

One question that has been eluding us for years is the colour of the 'Arm of Service' serial plate used by 4 RNF in 1940. Your Dad could probably have told us in a flash...

Thank you Rich. I'm sorry to say I don't know any details like that. If you haven't already done so try the R.N.F. museum at Alnwick Castle Northumberland they would try to help.

    Hello Peter,

    Welcome to this forum!

What a coincidence! A couple of days ago I was at the National Archives, where I copied a document about the RNF. Hope it is of interest!

What can I say here? The work you chaps must have done to dig up these documents and take the today photographs and post them on line allow people like me to see all this is quite remarkable. Thank you seems so inadequate. Rich posted the comment "Regrettably we probably began this research too late...." Let me tell you the ghosts at Dunkirk will all be shouting a silent " Better Late Than Never. Well done"! to all the people like you that take the time and trouble to draw attention to these events of long ago. I need to speak to some members of my family and dig around a bit I'm going to see if I can come up with anything of interest.

Perhaps one of those mentioned on the 19th May?

The fact that he is buried at Duisans suggests a casualty of the Arras counter-attack which commenced on the afternoon of the 20th There are three Northumberland Fusiliers there, one of them unidentified.

It's great to read the posts on here as they're of special interest. My Grandfather was killed on the 21st May 1940 and is buried in Beaurains. I understand that he drove a Dingo.

I know this page has not been active for a few years, but I just wanted to say how much I've appreciated reading through the bits and pieces of history you have all compiled. My grandfather joined The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers 4th Battalion at 19 years old (primarily for the motorcycle), and just recently passed in January at 101 years old. I wish I had found this forum while he was still alive, as I can imagine how excited he would have been to share his stories. I hope whoever comes across this can enjoy a few pictures of him in his youth. gppa.jpeg
