    Sorry about that, chaps.

To explain why we were off for much of today:
The forum has been shifted to a new server, in a consolidation move by our beneficent owner.

Obviously, we would have wanted to tell you all beforehand, but the move was in the hands of external techie types & we didn't quite get the chance.

Work being done to make the hosting more efficient, and get everything squared away for an intended move to the next generation of forum software.
Some of us have had a play with Xenforo 2, and I'm pretty sure people will like it. Better editor (the posting box thingy) better picture handling, embedding of links from Yewtoob, Twatter etc. nicer phone/tablet skin - Tables etc. Just generally more 'modern'.

So there we are. We're on a different server, without apparently all that DNS 'where's the bloody site gone?' stuff of previous shifts.

    I hope...

    Cheers,
    ~A

Good to hear the empire has not been penetrated by an intruder......thought that there might be trouble ahead until I saw "maintenance"

If you are starting a list it would appear that the search facility is not working - sorry!

Phew. I had feared the forum had been overrun by a hideous army of hackers, bots etc. Thanks for all your hard work on our behalf.

As a workaround for search you might be able to use Google. In the search bar type

    site:ww2talk.com

Followed by a space and your search terms.

Search is a server level service I can't access. Pretty sure we know why it's not working. Should be straightforward.
Otto's on it, but checking the time in Texas i'm assuming he's at work.

Profile history etc. Uses the same system.
Chris's suggestion a good 'un in the meantime.

Apologies again, chaps. Will all be shaken out soon as.

There is currently a snowstorm in Texas.
    I shit you not.

Power apparently inconsistent - sorting due when stabilises.

The weather report picture clearly illustrates what they say in the States:
"Between Florida and the Arctic there are only willow fences"

Well, Taxsus is about as large as Western You-rope, so it could be snowing in the north and be warm enough swim outside down south.
But, in this case, this is a significant weather event, to use WeatherWonk lingo.
The frontal boundary is on the Alabama Mississippi line and while we are close enough to smell the stink there, the temps are a good 30°F higher over here.

    Yes, mate.
Afraid that's the issue at the mo as all that stuff runs off the search system.
Looks like Texas's Ice storm is lifting so hopefully power back up for Otto soon.

What it is, is that our search runs using an external plugin called 'Elasticsearch'.
It's a clever system, but it needs to sit on the same server & didn't get transferred over properly in the shift.
I'm assuming here, but even rebuilding the local search index cache here can easily take an hour or two & I'd probably feel the same as Otto that a power cut in the middle of that would make me very nervous about screwing other things up, in that magical way that pooters can.

If ever there was anything to confirm the Internet being an odd place; a group of mostly UK-based WW2-obsessives being directly affected by the weather in Texas is right up there for me.
Seen a lot of 'Murcans over the last few years getting quite exercised about power outages - funny to now have an interest in it.

    Aha.
    Brainwave.

    Duh...

Disabled Elasticsearch & search seems to be back.
Rebuilding the cache now so it may go iffy for a while, and I await the news that I'm in trouble with Otto if it messes with proper tweaking of the clever-bollocks system.

Really should have thought of that first.
