the offers there anyway, especially if they decide to use the mk7 as a length of scaffold pole welded to the mantlet just aint good enough in my opinion but we will see what the powers that be decide.

I am sorry to have to tell you, that despite my pleas to the Regiment's the NIH Association to correct things before affairs get out of hand, it has fallen on deaf ears.

Burying heads in the sand and hope it that will now go away - one cannot lie to school children and the Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim in something one buries up the carpet. Especially now that it has been picked up on the internet by 35 plus entries from the media/websites.

Om a happier note, it has given the incentive to smarten up Armour Welding on the Churchill Tank Mark VII by placing the 40 photos aside the script in order they be seen without having to click on the photos.

    Sadly,

    Gerry

This preserved Churchill Tank was officially unveiled in Carrickfergus today.

Some of these tanks were built by Harland and Wolff at Woodburn Road in Carrickfergus during WW2.

The grand unveiling of a Churchill Tank gifted to Carrickfergus Borough Council by the Ministry of Defence will form the mainstay of this year’s Carrickfergus Armed Forces Day taking place on Saturday 28 June. As a precursor to the event, a special talk will take place in the Civic Centre Mall at 7pm on Friday 27 June. The talk will be given by Tim Strickland, the son of Major General Eugene Strickland (known as ‘Strick’), who famously commanded the North Irish Horse regiment during the Second World War and specifically during the Battle of the Hitler Line in Italy during May 1944. This special talk will provide a fascinating insight into this battle and his father’s time also in command of the North Irish Horse regiment during its time spent in North Africa during 1943. Tim will also focus on the manoeuvres commanded by his father with specific reference to the Churchill Tank. The Churchill Tank has been refurbished with funding provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund and ably assisted by pupils from both Downshire School. It is due to be unveiled at its permanent new location of the Cenotaph at 2.00pm on the afternoon of Armed Forces Day and the North Irish Horse regiment will have its own interactive display stand beside the tank.

    Diane.

As part of my battlefield studies to Cassino, I include an explanation of the NIH attack that supported 2 Canadian Infantry Brigade. I would very much like to talk to Tim Strickland in order to ensure that I nam getting it absolutely right.

Do you have his contact details by chance?

    Regards

    Frank

Just going on long time memory -and the Regimental Diary - I always thought that our C.O. Lt.Col.Strickland D.S.O. M.M. was commanding the NIH for the Gustav Line

battles as the NIH C.O. had gone off sick to hospital and we were commanded by Lt Col Straubenzee until Strickland returned - then Straubenzee took over 12th RTR

    Cheers

    AS a PS to posting #29 we have this -23rd March 1944 - " the new C.O.will be Maj E.V.Strickland M.M. now 2i/c NIH"

the C.0.at that time for NIH was believed to be the 3rd Baron 0'Neil…

Further - May 1944 - Summery of events in May '44 - During the month two changes of command in the regiment Lt Col E.V.Strickland M.M

leaving to command NIH, Lt Col Straubenzee taking over and leaving after ten days to command 12thRTR,Lt.Col Strickland returning once
more to command, after commanding NIH for the battles of Gustav and Adolf Hitler lines…

    Cheers
