    Good evening,
I am looking for information on No2. Army Service Corps. Can some one please confirm where this was based and what was its function.
    Many thanks

    Hi,

If that is the full title of the unit it might be missing word(s) on the end….such as……

    Depot?

    Training Regiment?

    Reinforcement Unit?

    Holding Unit?

There could be other words that are missing…..

Where and in what context have you come across the unit as described?

Have you searched UK National Archives for a War Diary?

Is it the entry concerning his transfer to Royal Engineers in April 1944?

If so it is noted in the context of a Part 2 Order from Sub Base No 2 ASC regarding the transfer.

Have you got the entry on his B103 form re this transfer?

There is usually more detail recorded about a man’s movements on the B103 than recorded on the Statement of Services form. When a man was in the UK it often records a unit location.

    From: Routledge Library Editions: Psychiatry

“The first Army Selection Centre was opened at Matlock, Derbyshire in March 1943. The work increased, and by the summer of 1944 there were four centres (Matlock, Edinburgh, Croydon and Aberystwyth) with a Central Clearing House at Croydon. In April 1944 No 3 Army Selection Centre was allocated to 21 Army Group and thereafter dealt with only men from that formation”

It seems the purpose was to reallocate men to a more suitable unit. I can’t see any reference to No 2 ASC unfortunately.

n.b. The Army Service Corps was granted the ‘Royal’ prefix in 1918.

The second and 5th images you’ve posted are part of the B103. The 5th image is the frontispiece and can be accompanied by any number of continuation sheets.

The 2nd image is a continuation sheet and has entries from November 1945 until his demobilisation. It may be that MOD have failed to send you the continuation sheet pages covering the period from his call up to October 1945.

It is not unusual for a clerical error to be made (albeit usually a total lack of B103 forms) and the usual forum advice is to make further contact with MOD to ask for the file to be rechecked to identify the missing documents.

Some members have had some success and been provided with the forms whilst others have had a negative response from MOD on the basis the forms have been misplaced sometime over the past almost 80 years.

I can’t answer your query about “No 2 ASC” yet but I’ll have a look at the B102 index card when I am on my iPad later and can see it more clearly to see if it assists.

It is likely to be one of the Army Selection Centre’s mentioned by Richard above and he was likely sent there as his Medical Category of B6 was so low that he needed to be closely assessed. There is no mention of the type of disability suffered.

I have seen mention of the Welsh ASC on Scots Guards service files. Men were subjected to various tests and interviews - psychological & physical - to enable the army to best place them. I’ve seen the forms used in several files.

It was a similar process as that used for the assessment of returning POW’s from early 1945.

I have done some further research, looks like he had to sign the Official Secrets Act in 1943 as he was involved with the DD tanks project. amongst other things at Orford Ness. He did mention to me very vaguely that he was working on some projects, the Matilda Baron was one of them.
The letter that came from the MOD stated that they had sent all they could on this individual. Which is strange wording to use.
I can answer your question on disability, while he was tank training when he first joined up the crew managed to hit a mine and the tank ended up on its side, the crew managed to escape, however Rowland lost his hearing in one ear and suffered from blackouts. Which would be the reason for the B6 on his medical.

    Hi,

Thanks for the additional background information.

The phrase quoted from MOD correspondence is the standard form of words on all covering letters.

I’d still chase up the missing pages of the B103 with them.

That’s excellent Stewart. It fills in the whole of his service. Posting to 79th Armoured Division - aka “Hobart’s Funnies” - ties in with your previous mention of experimental tanks.

Also puts some meat on the bone re No 2 ASC. I shared some documents by e mail with a now sadly deceased forum member re a Scots Guards ASC attendee during lockdown. I’ll revisit the email exchange over the weekend to see if it assists re your location query.

The documents concerned a soldier with mental health issues who was invalided out of the army following his time in an ASC.

    Steve

    EDIT TO ADD

The papers I have concern a man sent to No 4 ASC - situated in Aberystwth.
