Does anyone know where this battalion was situated in 1945 and 54 Reinforcement Holding Unit in 1946. I have really tried to trace these two and as usual I have not found any clues . Hope you can help. Thanks Elsie

Bamboo43 Thankyou so much for helping me and the link, now as you know I always follow with my stupid question so here goes . The info on the link does that mean it was based in Europe . I am going to be honest when I go on National Archives site I never seem to be able to follow the info .

    Hi Elsie,

Yes, It states North West Europe, so I'm thinking that is where it was based. No question is ever stupid, that is how we learn in this old research game.

    Elsie,

Using some of my grey matter in searching for No. 7 Holding Battalion, I came across this link at the National Archives. This is for Reinforcement Holding Units. Centre 7. this was situated in Burma during the month of August 1945.

This might be what you are looking for, but I cannot be 100% sure. Let's hope someone else can add more definite information.
Do these dates make sense for I presume William's WW2 journey?

    Elsie,

The document will be in the form of a paper file, it will have more information within it than that on the screen. Some documents are larger than others. What are you hoping to find in this file?

As I said earlier you need to be sure this is the correct file for your purposes. I'm sure you already know, but a couple of the members on WW2Talk will copy these files for you at a reasonable rate.

My advice is to wait a while until you understand the new information you have received in the shape of your Dad's full service records.

    Best wishes

    Steve

I endorse Bamboo43's sound advice to wait until you have correctly interpreted your Father's Service Record before ordering documents from Kew

For what is worth my researches have shown that 50,51 and 52 Reinforcement Holding Units were based in the Bielefeld/Herford and Osnabruck areas of BAOR in Autumn 1945.

Steve you will wish you had not asked that because , well, um,here we go,onward and upward and a bit personal and I hope I don't get in to trouble off the site regulators but this went on more than we thought through the war as we all know,so here goes
When dad died I was told by a family friend that my cousin was my brother by another mother and my dads sister had adopted him. Apparently this lady gave birth in Nov 1946 and in jan 1947 turned up at dads home where he lived with his mum(dad was away in army) and said here I can't keep this am married got 4 kids . Grandma being grandma said ok and dads sister adopted him . Now at the time of being told this I was ok with it , dad was single not even got a girlfriend and he did not meet mum till 1949.I waited while we had all emotionally settled down after losing dad and Went to see my dads sister , well her reaction shocked me she went bananas at me and told me to never mention it again which I didn't. Then I start doing dads war years research and my cousin who I am close to rings me to go see him and he tells me he is my brother so I listen to him all upset and leave it at that then as my research starts coming together I realised that dad had not been in that area so I start checking dads brothers record and as my collection of information builds up I realise dad was not in that area and perhaps not even in this country but uncle jack was and my uncle jack was married with a son when war broke out and he certainly liked the ladies and forgot a time or two that he was married. Now dad was lovingly bullied and spoilt by his big sister and mother and because my dad was a really nice guy he would have gone along with what his mother and sister wanted as they were very close as a family and above all he would have agreed to save his brother a load of grief . I will not be telling my cousin or my family what I have found out dads been gone a long time .my cousin has been like a brother any way as on our street there were just 3 detached houses dad and us lot lived in one dads sister lived in second one and his brother lived in the third one so we were fetched up together we all went on holiday together my dads sister taught me, my kids and grandchildren to knit sew and bake so yes we are all very close so it would serve no purpose to go any where with this but unfortunately I am hooked on the war years and for my own craving I need to know. I told you you would be wishing you had not asked and publicly putting it on here not even the young ones in our family are interested in the war or dad and uncle jacks war years Elsie

    Elsie,

I've got two such stories in my family, so you are not alone here. Also when my brother first started our family research, long before I dipped my toe into our history, the first thing he found was that only my Dad was actually conceived within wedlock, everyone else in that generation, well let's just say they were on the way. It was that time and the confusion and upset of war.

My take on this is its life it's always happened and will continue to happen. I love the characters in my family my uncle jack and uncle dick told some great stories and I still smile when I think of the life's these two led. Both were married and both were not coming back after the war as they had fell in love uncle jack in Italy when they came home to be demobbed it was only my grandma who laid the law down and they always listened to grandma .
