Hello, I am off to New Zealand for a relatively short trip in two months time. I will mostly be in the North Island but I am willing to go further for something special. Does anyone know of any "must see" sights or have any WW2 related recommendations? Thanks Dave
Dave, Try these two: http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/10/war-memorial http://www.mch.govt.nz/nz-identity-heritage/national-war-memorial The websites might even give you more ideas. Mark
Hi Dave, I second Mark's suggestions and also recommend the NZ Army Museum http://www.armymuseum.co.nz/ It is a bit of a bugger to get to if you are reliant on public transport though. There is also the RNZN Museum http://navymuseum.co.nz/ Let me know if there is something specific you are after I will see if I can think of something suitable for you.
Thanks folks, They all look good. No I am not after anything specific but happy to take detours to visit interesting sites/sights. Dave
One detour you might consider while in Auckland is J. F. Kennedy Memorial Park in Castor Bay, on Auckland's North Shore. http://www.kennedypark.org.nz/ We have guided tours between 11.00 AM and 2.00 PM on the second Sunday of each month. If that's not convenient, private tours can be arranged for a modest fee. (PM me and I'll see what we can arrange.)
I will be elsewhere that Sunday but I will drop you a PM closer to the time. Looks interesting. Thanks!
I can certainly recommend the NZ Army Museum at Waiouru (just about in the middle of North Island), but don't expect much else in Waiouru - it really seemed a one-horse town. Even finding somewhere to eat was so hard we went elsewhere. Chris
Very much so Chris! I think there is a Subway (Sandwich shop) there now lol. Taupo is about 45min north with plenty of amenities.
Haven't lived in NZ for 26 years but MOTAT was always worth a visit. Nick http://www.motat.org.nz/explore/exhibitions/aviation-display-hall
If you can make it to the South Island, the Air Force museum in Christchurch is well worth a visit. http://www.airforcemuseum.co.nz/ Cheers, Craig
