Hello to all. I stumbled across this forum and never realized such a well supported WW2 forum existed. There's a strong service history in my family background... my father having served in the army, and his two brothers - my uncles - in the air force and navy respectively. They never much discussed any detail about their duties and experiences and I understand now that it was - and still is - quite common for "old soldiers" to be reticent in these matters. The recent death of my father has spurred myself and my sister into research. We've discovered that my fathers dad - my grandad - served in the Private Welsh Regiment and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, and War Medal 1939-45. My dads mother had two brothers (my great uncles I presume) who were lost in Dunkirk. But the recent death of my father, and uncles many years ago, is the main reason I've joined here as I hope to receive much useful information and pointers in where to search for records, information, etc, about their time in service. Although I'm now at retirement age, the passing years seem to instill a yearning in you to resolve matters of the past.... sort of putting things to bed so to speak, and I hope I can not only gain knowledge from ww2talk.com but also contribute in some small way.
Welcome. You may yet be amazed at the information you may find on the site and what members are willing to share. Could be a start to create posts under the individual names in the relevant sections, give as much information as you can, if you don't know military details, dates, locations etc will help. Consider getting hold of official service records, only available from one place. Get a copy of military service records: Apply for the records of someone who's deceased - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
Thanks Tony, that's a great load of information to get me started. Very grateful and genuinely appreciated.
Welcome to the forum as suggested give their names if you feel comfortable and as suggested apply for the service records regards Clive
