    Hi
My name is Fiona and I have been reading many of your forums and help that has been given, with interest over the past months but never sure how to get started myself.

I am trying to find information about my grandfather and the only information I have about him is on my mothers birth certificate, he was not married to my grandmother. Should I give the details here or is there another forum I should be posting to?

    Thanks

This is where by far and away most of our awesome experts hang out most of the time.
Your odds are much, much better over here even with the frightfully little amount of information you presently have
than at our sister forum where you also posted this. See: http://ww2f.com

Their advice will be: #1 apply for his service records. - much of which is on-line, easily found once you know where to look.
They are tip top at this. So check the pinned threads on "how to" first - both there and here.

See also Auzzie specialist at this at: http://www.ozatwar.com/wwiiresearchtool.htm

    FYI:
There is a relatively "new" newcomer here, from Queensland that has a neat thread here you might enjoy.

Fiona, welcome to the forum. Can you post your Granddads details that you know? DOB etc. Also check the Australian website called Trove for any news articles on him. Ancestry.com have an Australian collection and also a 14 day free trial.

Fred is havering a load of rubbish. WW2Talk is the best website hee hee (only joking with you Fred. I daren't look at the other website in case I get drawn into that one as well and besides I would feel disloyal looking at it).

Good luck with your search. All the best - Maria

    Hi Fiona

    Welcome from another Queenslander.
As suggested post his details, are you talking about British or Australian service, the process is totally different, but we can help you sort it out.

    regards

Hello from yet another Queenslander (transplanted from down South). As suggested above, start a new thread in whatever sub-forum looks closest to what you know (maybe "Searching for someone etc").

With that new thread place into the first post what you do know, where you got that info from, where you have already searched (with or without success) and photograph any documents or photos you do hold.

Within reason, all you have to do then is sit back and watch and watch as the resident experts clamour over each other to assist you (I even dabble in helping where I can).

    cheers and welcome aboard

    Dave

    Thanks everyone for your welcome
All the information I have is from my mothers scottish birth certificate
George Wright born I guess around 1900, my grandmother was born in 1907 Glasgow. her name was Agnes (Nessie) McLean Wright.
My mothers Birth certificate 1939 says George Wright - Bandsman 1st Batton. Glasgow Highlanders (a drummer my mother was told)
I don't know that he was in active service or if he was in the home guard or similar.
    Thanks again Fiona

Hi Fiona, there's a thread on here about the Glasgow Highlanders (Highland Light Infantry/H.L.I.). My great uncle was also in the Glasgow Highlanders (a Private), but due to his age he served his time in Glasgow. You need to get a hold of his record from Glasgow.

    Hi Fiona

To apply for his service records, you will need some more information, probably a death certificate and maybe a service number, or if you don't know that, his birth date.
You can search on Scotlands People - http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ to find those, but with his name you may need more details to narrow it down. You may have to look for their marriage certificate first (at least you can narrow that one down enough). You may also need his death record.

    regards

I think in order to get his service record I am going to have to find out more about him.
As I don't have any birth, death or marriage details this could be a bit tricky, there seemed
to be a lot of George Wrights about at the time.
There is a Glasgow Highlanders Association on line, I have tried to contact them several times
But have never received a reply, maybe is am contacting the wrong person
Well will keep trying if any ideas please contact

    Cheers

Hi Fiona, I've been having a look at Scotlandspeople and I think you've a task ahead of you sorting out George's birth details.

Can I ask, was your grandmother Nessie's maiden name also Wright? Where & when did George die? Also what is your mother's full name and full names of any of her siblings? Children are often named back then using names from previous generations. I just hope some of their names may hold the key to unlocking the names of George's parents for you. Otherwise, you could spend a fortune opening all those George Wright birth entries.

Raymond Bell is the contact you need for the Glasgow Highlander archives. I'll look out his email address and send you a private message, so keep an eye out on the Messenger (envelope symbol at the top of the screen). This will be highlighted in red when you've receive a private message.

    Hi Fiona,
My Dad was in the 1st Battalion Glasgow Highlanders. I live here on Mt Tamborine, Qld.
I have been researching extensively his war record, and have much detail of the Glasgow Highlanders from beginning of 1944 to mid 1945. As well as many other bits I could pick up relating to them throughout the war.
Feel free to contact me and I can endeavour to help you connect dots etc.
    Cheers....Nick
