Seems to be a new fim on the horizon, called Rommels War. Brings up the old question: Rommel, nice guy or ardent Nazi?

Darn. The article says that the movie concentrates on the last seven months of his life. I was hoping it would have the Battle of France in it, complete with Char Bs.

I'm anxious to see the forums thoughts on his politics. I don't know enough about them

In my view - Rommel was a major opportunist as we saw in the desert with his tactics and when Hitler "adopted " him to lead the 7th Ghost AD in France - he became a Nazi - which lessened after Tunis - and almost disappeared when he took over in France
    in his last months...

Whilst I have read a lot of books touching on Rommel I have only read on book specializing in Rommel. Rommel, Battles and Campaigns by Kenneth Macksey.

This book shed a different light on Rommels leadership and that several battles could easily have gone against the German Afrika Korps, had the other Commanders in the field not exercised their own judgement at critical moments.

At the moment I believe so, but I am sure it will be dubbed into English and broadcast in the UK and elsewhere.

I presume you will give us your normal critics view of the program.

Rommel had a knack of exploiting opportunities on the battlefield and was helped by able commanders of his units, as to his political views I have often wondered which way he went on the final soloution and other aspects of the war.

It as always intrigued me that he was missing from his command during both major battles he faced when he was needed.

    Mike,

ZDF, a TV sender here in Germany, produced a film regarding the Bomb Plot with Von Stauffenberg.

It was exceptionally good and very faithful to the historical record and I thought it was better that the Hollywood style Tom Cruise version.

I hope that this is in the same style.

Whilst there are those who love or Hate Rommel, to me, he did appear to be a man of opportunism.

    Rosy,

I just hope that we are not disappointed, but as Kate pointed out, the quality of the actors is hopefully a good pointer.

Rommel became one of Hitler's favourites through the German propaganda machine of the NS Regime through the efforts of Geobbels. This image of Rommel in turn gave him the reputation of Germany's most popular General.

I would say that Rommel was one of those in the Wehrmacht who followed the aims of Hitler without question while the going was good,an attitude which was prevalent by the Wehrmacht senior leadership, apart from Von Blomberg and Von Fritsch who were both sacked for dubious reasons.Hitler then filled Von Blomberg's post as Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht in early 1938.

Rommel's attitude to Hitler changed when victories became defeats and disillusion set in with Hitler's unrealistic military leadership and with worldwide reaction to German atrocities. In June 1944,Rommel and Von Rundstedt fearing the worse for Germany, tried to convince Hitler's to end the war while Germany had considerable military manpower but Hitler refused.

After his return from injury in Normandy,Rommel began to think politically, for the first time ever. But did not favour Hitler being assassinated, rather Hitler should be put on trial by the Germans. In the aftermath of the July 1944 plot, there was leakage of the conspirator's proposal that Rommel would be elevated to "Chief of State" in the new regime. With this relevation,Rommel's fate was sealed.

At Rommel's state funeral,Von Rundstedt summed up Rommel's allegiance to Hitler with the oration "A pitiless destiny snatched him from us"."His heart belonged to the Fuehrer"

Perhaps this oration was tailored for Hitler and the Nazi Party hierarchy but one fact remains.Rommel never took part in any active resistance related to the July 1944 plot despite his late opposition to Hitler.

    Tom,
I asked ARD, the chanel No. 1 in Germany about any version in English or possibly subtitles in English, but the answer was negativ. But if the interest in other countries is big enough and critics are as good as the comments in local newspapers, I am sure you will have someone producing the film with subtitles in e.g. UK or in the US.

    Stefan,

    Thank you for that information.

If it is seen in good light as being Historically factual and well acted then I am sure that you are correct and it will end up with different language versions or at least subtitles.

    Regards
    Tom
