Nice man. Here is an image of him at a Battle of Britian day event in 2000 at the Tangmere Aviation Museum with a flight simulator of his P40E. I asked him what spent his time doing. Still flying in his 80s..
What gets me, as it so often does with these chaps, is that those 27 aerial kills were achieved before he'd turned 22.
As a yoooooof of 13, my Grandad took me to a Battle of Britain event in 1995 at Headcorn Aerodrome. I was stood in the background as Neville Duke was being interviewed and afterwards my Grandad offered to buy me his signed war diaries. Being a courteous teenager I obeyed my Mum's strict rules that I was not to let Grandad dip into his pension fund on my day out with him, so I politely declined. It remains an omission from my bookshelf to this day!
