Michael, it would be grand if you kep tthis thread open and posted some progress photos, or at least of the outcome I Am up for a laugh so yes will be glad to. Natalie has just told me it has to be A4 size talk about making things hard, really need to give this some thought.
if it's a4, why not do it in 1/32 scale and make a close-up example of a cut-away cross section illustrating a typical British trench in 1916 on the Somme battlefield? There are two sets of figures you could include, around £9 each first the Tommy's https://www.armiesinplastic.com/showcase/shop.php?iid=348&category=21&page=2&action=item&title=5406-wwi-british-army-in-steel-helmets or you could equally use the US soldiers as substitute British (I doubt any of her classmates will know the differences!) https://www.armiesinplastic.com/showcase/shop.php?iid=338&category=21&page=1&action=item&title=5401-wwi-us-army-doughboys
Here goes the first stage of Natalie and my trench build. We are really enjoying it we have not had a fight or disagreement yet so it must be going good. Was thinking we should cut another trench out has a reserve trench what do you think ? Please feel free to tell us what you think of it so far if we are missing anything or it doesn't look right has this is the time to correct. Regards Michael and Natalie.
Keep going as you are, keeping it simple is good too. You can make sandbags out of Das, modelling clay. DAS Air Drying Modelling Clay - www.craftmill.co.uk Roll out into long sausage & cut in regular sized lengths & shape to something that looks like a sand bag & start stacking them like bricks.
Am glad you are liking it so far. I showed Natalie some videos from youtube yesterday about trench life and ww1 she never said a word too shocked with what she was watching must admit even i was taken back it was in colour and the music was haunting.
if we are missing anything or it doesn't look right has this is the time to correct. That's bloody good work! I have a whole project here to complete (delayed by writing commitments!) and you're both giving me inspiration to crack on! One suggestion - shell holes? It might be easier to do them now? Dont forget the front line was nicely peppered with small calibre, large calibre and the wire could be twenty yards away from the lip of the trench Outstanding work, keep it up!
Am struggling with the shell holes and bomb craters has any body got any tips i tried to make some out of poly filler at work without success i am afraid. Natalie has been poorly at the moment so we have stopped at the moment but she his feeling a tad better so will be back onto it shortly. Cheers Michael.
A couple photos so we can look at what you're doing and we can help you make it worse, oops!, improve on it?
Natalie and i have been busy the last couple of days we have been making ladders, duct boards and our sandbags and we have even got Lucy my youngest helping out it is getting a real family project.
Today we have had messy time Natalie started too paint the sandbags, ladders and duct boards, while i got to work on the trench as i was struggling to make the bomb craters earlier in the week so i just went for it today and done the best i could. I then glued the craters to my board and with the UPV glue i spread it all over the trench and sprinkled our budgie sand all over to give it a rough finish hope i haven't spoiled it.
The sandbags are a marvellous idea Good work, integrating everybody, it has to be immensely rewarding ----- Hadn't noticed there was a second photo set. You still could blend the cowpats, oops!, crater edges, as they are they appear to be floating above the rest But aside from that easily corrected detail they look fine, I don't understand why you were so worried about!
The sandbags are a marvellous idea Good work, integrating everybody, it has to be immensely rewarding Za you wouldn't believe how rewarding this is mind you there was more paint on me tonight than anywhere else the little monster covered me in it but i will get my revenge. Have just read your edit cow pats i like it.
It's coming on brilliantly. Really great to see the family involvement in a history project. Well done to all.

Excellent stuff mate. Can't beat a bit of blue peter modelling. Can't wait to see the finished product.
