I'm starting to wonder if Gordie Price & 5LFS are red herrings. As a LFS was a Lancaster Finishing School, it is unlikely that Price (or Merchant) came from a Lancaster SQN. More likely they came from a SQN flying a different type of aircraft - and maybe they didn't know each other prior to meeting as a crew at 5LFS / 617SQN

But, if they did come from the same SQN prior to being at 5LFS, along with other crewmen (but not our mystery WGCDR, who stayed with the original SQN), I wonder if the other ex-5LFS arrivals in December 1944 also came from the unknown SQN..........

I'm just musing here because I can't believe that it's this hard to find one ex-WGCDR in a relatively small place like Lismore. Hopefully when I next check my work emails someone might have come through for me.

I have several stories from Joe Merchant pre Dambusters days. (May add them later.)
My understanding is that their crew was sent to 5 L.F.S graduating 09.12.44 for extra training for heavy loads like Special Stores (Grand Slam) and Tallboys and for related training for their job with 617 Sqdn.

    Edit: Typo.

Otherwise, I have asked a couple of people in the Lismore region for help but nothing so far.

The only name that has surfaced so far from the Lismore region is this one - LEIGH, Boyd Lionel Hilton, Dr who served during the war as LEVY, LIONEL HILTON (changed name to LEIGH, BOYD LIONEL post war) O211747 (433005)

But he wouldn't have been very senior by the time the war ended, plus he re-enlisted post-war once he was a successful surgeon.

Fred, Using the search term RCAF in the newpaper archives for year '44, it gives over 800+ articles. Some text is scrambled until you open the article, but I've put together a spreadsheet with the names I can make out each month from the general search engine. Wish I had the time to open everything individually, but that would be a retirement job I think. I'll type the rest up when I get a bit more time. Cheers - Maria
