I don't think it is a fancy dress photo as he looks too smartly turned out. Are you sure can't identify the studio mark? They are normally raised. If you can you will have a date and a location to work with. Were the Seaforths in the same location as the CGs at that time?

Sadly I don’t have the original photograph as it is in the possession of his daughter who lives at the other of the country so I can not easily access it. There is a handwritten date of 26-10-34 on the back, this is some 18 months after we believe he enlisted in the Coldstream Guards. At this time I don’t know the location of the 2 units in Oct 34. I have messaged the Eden Camp museum where his uniform, medals and documents are on display in the hope that they can look at his Record of Service book for me and I am currently awaiting a response.

Many thanks for all of your replies, some very useful information as always on this forum.
I have this morning received a reply from the Eden Camp Museum regarding my cheeky request for information from Alfs Record of Service book which they hold. The collections manager has informed me that the museum is currently closed and that they are in the process of reorganising the displays. She has very kindly said that she will provide the information requested whilst the reorg is ongoing in due course.
I await her reply and will post on here when I have it.
    Thanks all .

Just an update to this post. I have as yet not heard from Eden Camp but in this mornings post I received a copy of Alf's Service Record which I had applied for on the 4th Jan 2020 and had given up hope of seeing.
His record confirms that he enlisted with the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards on the 1st June 1933 and he served with them throughout his service apart from a short 10 week period in 1936 when he appears to be with the 2nd Battalion. He returned home from POW camp on 18th May 1945 and his final months until he entered the reserve in March 46 he appears to be with the RAOC at Chilmark, perhaps just an admin posting as he seems to have spent most of this time on leave.
There is no mention of the Seaforth Highlanders so the photograph that sparked this post remains a mystery and I conclude that it was probably therefore a studio staged fancy dress for reasons unknown.
Many thanks again to all those who responded to this post.
