No need to thank me Barry, I haven't helped. But your discussion has led me to learn that my grandfather was in an arctic convoy, which I never knew for sure. So thank YOU.

Jonathan, I am describing these convoys on the website of the V & W DESTROYER ASSOCIATION and focusing on RA59 and the rescue of the Russian survivors of the WILLIAM S THAYER torpedoed and sunk on 30 April 1944. In addition to the rescue by FORT HALL 49 survivors were rescued by HMS WALKER and 98 year old Albert Foulser took some wonderful photographs of them on his 5/- Box Brownie camera which can be seen here: Escorting Arctic Convoys in 1943-4

I have been contacted by the Russian Grandson of Lt Valentin Alexandrovich Martinov who has sent me some superb phorographs of thwe Russian sub in which he served. He was rescued by HMS WHITEHALL but died soon after rescue and was buried at sea. I have published the ROP of WALKER & WHITEHALL on the web page for WALKER. Can you provide a photograph and further details of the rescue by FORT HALL? Please contact me.
