    My Grandfather
Hi, I was wondering if any of you could help.

My Grandad was born in 1898 in Londonderry His name was John Devenny. He was raised by a family that wasnt his own and because of this took their name McElroy (McIlroy on his medal card) He served with the skins in WW1.

He married in Ballycastle in 1937.

The only info i have on him for WW2 was that he was a Royal Engineer.
My cousin has said he was C Company 5th T.B.R.C and has given me the date 16/5/1943 but i have no idea what this is, or that it has any relavance.
My Grandad was also known as Jack an we think it may be him mentioned in a BBC online war story from a comrade. The story mentions No1 Section 246 field company Royal Engineers.

He fought and survived both Wars but sadly past away before i could ever meet him

I have tried to get his records from the M.O.D. but so far they have found nothing an have asked me to try again for his service number.. I live in Northern Ireland and have to way to the museum to look for him.

Any help anyone can give to me to help me able to track him would be amazing. Thank you

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Did you apply for his ww2 service records from Glasgow? You don't always have to know his service number-if you know his correct date of birth they should be able to find them for you. Make sure you ask for the full record.
I cannot help you with the other things you have been querying but others will be along to help you soon I am sure.

    Lesley

ps I don't suppose you have any photos of him in uniform you could post have you?

I don't know if this helps you but I found a Short Service document on Ancestry.co.uk for a John McElroy of 31 Royal Innis. Fuseliers. It's an Army Form B2505 dated 3/2/1916 when John was 19 years & 60 days. A farm labourer living at Mullins, Fintona?, Co. Tyrone. It has 588 Londonderry stamped on it and "No" 3/28835. If this is him, I could down load the doc for you and send if you sent me a private message with your email address.
