  1. Hello All

I am trying to research Grandfather Military career for my father. I knew grandad enrolled in 1926 at Winchester as an Apprentice Blacksmith and came out of the Army I believe in March 1955 as a Captain. He served in WW2 , Palestine and Cyprus. We believe was part of 249th Field Corps Royal Engineers and was supposed to go in on D-Day via Glider but plane towing his glider developed engine problems so landed later. He finished WW2 near Hamburg. Have some photos of him and some basic knowledge. Also I have join military records group for one month to see if I can find out further info.

    1) Would like to know his active service record when and where he served. What he did . I know some Railway work and Pontoon Bridge Building and possible Mine work as well.

    2) We think he is missing a medal has 5 but dad think there should be 6th

    3) Where is best places to look for accurate information please.

    Kindest regards

    Colin Morris

Best follow the advice above as his official records are the only way to go. Silly question but can you confirm his name?

Are you taking his regiment, 249 Fd Coy, from the casualty lists, B B Morris 1864393?

  4. Hi Tony56, many thanks for message and advice. I Can confirm the correct name : is Benjamin Barbrook Morris D.O.B. is 25th March 1910 Portsmouth also have copy of Death Cert. as 19th Nov 1979 Ipswich. Somewhere we have a copy of a London Gazette notice from 1944 about his first officer role. Believe also injured in late 1942. Was stationed near Bungay in Suffolk practicing Pontoon Bridge Building, when a terrible accident occurred and a man died. REF casualty list yes as this fits with knowledge we have.

    Cheers Colin

May be worth correcting his name in the thread title if you can. Casualty list states B B Morris wounded 2/11/42, you will note that service number is slightly different from London Gazette.

    Birth registered Q1 1911.

  7. Hi Tony56 thanks for this. Have made correction of name to tag but can't seem to change title name. My Father is looking up my grandfathers records and will post them here at a later date and will casualty list again.

    Cheers Colin

  8. Hello All

My father has found his Father Certificate of Service (Regular Army) Benjamin Barbrook Morris, Army No: 1864393 and Serial No: 1016832. Date of enlistment is 1st January 1926 at Winchester and was discharged on 1st March 1954 (28 yrs & 60 days service).

    1) Does Certificate of Service have information as Gov. War Record, please?

    2) Service with Colours Country: B.L.A . 18/12/44 to 12.9.45 and M.E.F. 7.11.45 to 10.1.48

Does BLA mean British Land Force and MEF mean Middle East Force?

    3) Death Certificate says D.O.B. as 1910 but service certificate of service says 1911 but this could simply be mistake.

    Kindest regards

    Colin Morris
