Hi everyone, Just wondered if you can help me at short notice...My father has passed away and I am speaking about his later life at the funeral on Friday, which includes breifly his war experiences. I know he got up to some mischief in WW II with the Loyals, !st Infantry Divsion, 2nd Infantry Brigade 1st Battalion ( aka the 47th ..?) He had his wings, he was in the Royal Signals Corp as well so Scaley back which is interesting because he very very rarely would talk about the war and his experiences, had to get him drunk and that wasn't easy... ( I only got four stories!)...and I suspect he had some involvement with the LRDG...maybe watching the road at Marble Arch He was a private and didn't want any additional targets on his arm even though he was offered a number of times... He was just to young to be a Dunkirk born Sept 1922...but I noted that the Loyals have a reference to North-West Europe in 1940 can't seem to get any info on that on...whilst his sister remembers him parachuting into the South of France or "something where like that" ?? I know he was in Africa he mentioned being 60 miles behind enemy lines watching the axis armoured divsions arriving... I know he was in Italy as I have a dog eared photo of him in Rome Jan 2nd 1945 in the company of a REME Driver Lunan and Private Gray of Lancashire fusiliers outside the Canadian Club with the Victor Emmanual monument in the far background. I suspect/believe he was in the Anzio landing and then they moved up the west side of Italy..he was hospitalised after he argued with a Mule and it stood on his foot! World War (1939 - 1945): Dunkirk 1940; Djebel Kess Kiss; Gueriat el Atach Ridge; North Africa 1943; Anzio; Fiesole; Monte Grande; Italy 1944-5; Johore; Singapore Island. North-West Europe 1940; Banana Ridge; Medjez Plain; Djebel Bou Aoukaz 1943 I; Gab Gab Gap; Rome; Gothic Line; Monte Gamberaldi; Monte Ceco; Batu Pahar; Malaya 1941-2 I have bought the Loyals book but don't think it will be here before the funeral... Any thoughts or comments welcome and much appreciated.. Thx Proud Son David

Condolences on the loss of your Father. Good luck with the speech on Friday. Unless you have anything hard & fast on what he did then it'd all be speculation. I suggest you just briefly mention his service in WW2 as a bit of an enigma you want to find out more about. You could send off for his Service Records but that will take months to get back.
Thanks everyone for your input I will stick to the known facts about the actual engagements and relate some of the stories he told me... At least I can follow up on it after the funeral and try to decipher his escapades... Best regards Dave
Condolences David. I've pinned the thread to give it a bit more visibility, hopefully you'll get a few more nuggets before Friday. ~Adam.

All I know about your father's Reg is from campaign in Tunisia, in that a company of Loyals were at The Bou [Djebel Bou Aoukaz] and ended up fighting with the Irish Guards. One of the IGs, Kenneally, received a VC for this action. See post no.s 1, 34 and 36 here: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/unit-documents/17665-irish-guards-1bn-4.html#post248102 Sorry, I can't be of more help. Regards, Diane
