I had changed it on the name database but forgot to change it on the number spreadsheet. You are not the only one getting old and forgetting things. Cheers Kevin
A couple more images of Canadian Shermans in Italy. These are courtesy Temujin and Imperial War Museum, images for reference and research only. Names look like ALFAR, BOROUGH ( might have something before ), BUTCH and one starting BAL?? Any thoughts or additional info appreciated. Cheers Kevin
Attached are a few more unidentified Canadian Sherman's and a Stuart VI BATTER, From various sources mostly courtesy Barry Miller. Cheers Kevin
The photos with the embedded "beeldebankwo2.nl" are... basically now missing context. The entries for those photographs on the website might tell you which archive they are from. That will probably identify where they were taken and the date might also be given. That information could be useful in identifying the unit based on which units were sent where during the liberation of the Netherlands. (I'm guessing that's when they were taken, roughly speaking) The photo of Cobra also clearly dates to a specific event with someone from the Middle East inspecting the tanks. Date/place would help identify the unit. If you can go back to Barry and ask for the original context it would help.

Thanks to Temunjin for adding those details. AFTON states Recce Regiment Groningen 1945 AUBURN just states Netherlands 15/4/15 I have just found another. ANXIOUS Netherlands September 1944
Several of the above are from 3rd Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment (Governor-General's Horse Guards), mostly shot in Leeuwarden on 15 Apr 1945 or in Groningen in 1945: 'AFTON' Sherman Ic & 'ANT' Sherman Ic AoS 45 GGHG, Groningen 1945 - 178456: 'ALBERT' Sherman V GGHG, Sint Jacobsstraat, Leeuwarden 15 Apr 45 - 120293: 'ALEC' Sherman Vc AoS 45 GGHG - Leeuwarden FDTWEEWOA232: 'ANXIOUS' Sherman V AoS 45 GGHG, Groningen, NL 1945 - 178464 'AUBURN' Sherman Vc GGHG opp Hotel Phoenix, Sint Jacobsstraat, Leeuwarden 15 Apr 45 - 121805: 'AUBURN' Sherman Vc GGHG, Engelsestraat, Leeuwarden 15 Apr 45 - 121806: 'AUBURN' Sherman Vc GGHG, Sint Jacobsstraat, Leeuwarden 15 Apr 45 - 120394: From the same unit, 'RACY' Stuart VI T287669 AoS 45 GGHG, Leeuwarden 15 Apr 45 (dvr's windscreen) - 121729:
The name of Sherman V 'ASIA' above matches exactly the location, size and style of other tanks from 12 CAR (Three Rivers Regt).
Hi Michel, Thanks as always for the clarifications. A couple I had from Temujin. ARAB - 16/10/1943. I am assuming Italy and looking at how light the A Sqn border is I would guess at Ontario (red?) or Three Rivers (yellow?) ATHEN(A) - Sicily 18/7/1943 COMET II - 21/10/1943 Possibly the same as ARAB Cheers Kevin
ALGONQUIN, ANZAC, ARAB, ATHENA & ATLAS have the same peculiarly shaped 'A's as 12 CAR, confirmed by the AoS 174 on ANZAC: The location, size and shape of the names on all five tanks are identical, so all must belong to 12 CAR (Three Rivers), before they changed their naming style for large, dark names in the centre of the hull sides, but still with the same characteristic shape of the letters. At the same time the Sqn tac symbol on the turret also changed from Yellow to a dark colour, probably to make it less conspicuous, because the Regiment still was the second in the Brigade and should thus have retained its Yellow colour. These changes probably corresponded to a change of mounts and/or theater of operation.
Sorry Michel you would't I guess it helps if you attach the right image. This I think is Dagwood and another unknown which looks a bit like ACME. Cheers Kevin
Looking thru some more Canadian Army films and spotted these two tank names. I’m not sure if these are Shermans, I think they might be Stuarts ? Source: Canadian Army Newsreel No. 65 Bomber III. I “think” its census number may be 271162 Boot Hill II, Sorry this was just a quick screen shot as this tank passed by Bomber III in the background. I took another shot of the back end of Boot Hill as it passed by and I “think” I almost got its census number…..but I’ll let younger eyes than mine figure it out…..but my guess is 271160 Here’’s a photo of the other tanks in the background of the two that had names above. I’m pretty sure these are all Stuarts
