    Not sure how much myth this contains. In the days when warships were coal fired thr coaling process meany that just abut everyone got black and if I could get around the dumb forum limiits I could post photos to prove this. As oil firing was introduced thanks to WSC in the RN this ceased . In any case the real 'black gang, would be the trimmers who had to keep moving the coal round between bunkers to keep the ship level
