Can anyone tell me where the British military police were based in Blankenberge in 1944/5 please? Was it the local police station? I'm visiting soon and would like to take photo's if possible.

    Thanks,

    Paul

Hi Paul - my late father too was in the Military Police (Royal Artillery) and he too was in Blankenberge at the end of the war. I have recently come across this photo from a relative which unfortunately gives no indication of where it was taken but the buildings look Belgian to me. The soldiers appear to be from different regiments as I can see a couple of Scots there.

I have no firm info. I know that after the war he took my Mother to meet the Belgian lady he had been billeted with and my Mum was somewhat shocked (although she had been in the ATS) by Madame's English which was freely interspersed with swear words picked up from the British Troops!

I do remember my father telling me that when they arrived at a barracks where the Germans had left in a hurry they had left their guard dogs behind. To their surprise the dogs were friendly and it was not until some civilians came near them they acted as guard dogs. My dad then realised that the dogs accepted them as they were in uniform albeit British not German and did not see them as a threat.

It would be great if anyone recognised this photo - my Dad Joe'Paddy' Bogue is the last soldier top right(the til;es surrounding the arch of the house on the right are 'coming out of his shoulder' Joe 'Paddy' Bogue Royal Artillery WW2 extreme right flank of back row possibly Belgium.jpg
