Found these records in US Engineer documents that I thought I would post, for all of you that look at the D Day Marshalling Camps. If I find anymore, I will of course post them

Just found a HUGE load of photographs, mainly US troops, but in England, Cherbourg, etc etc. Some have what they are about (who it is etc) but a lot are just photo’s. they show American camps in England, vehicles being crated and loaded, troops going on Rhino barges, German POW’s, some combat photo’s, etc etc……their are 100’s of photo’s. Frankly their is so much that I couldn’t possibly tell you how many and what is on all of them.

Photo quality ranges from very good to hard to see details. Some are “contact prints”

this is on Fold3.com, and if you have a subscription, here’s a link to the Cover page of the photos

    Cheers

EDIT: 301 pages of photos, some with single shots, many pages with multiple photo’s

This same file has diagrams of every camp on the list that I posted at the start of this thread. I was going to copy and past…….but they are MUCH CLEARER if you look at the original on Fold3.com and zoom in, then you can read all the detail. I’ll post the ‘cover page” and one of the camps to show below. Again, you will need a Fold3.com membership to see them, but I can help anyone who would like to see a specific camp (try to get as much detail as I can). Link to the page below

I “zoomed in” to a portion of the camp above, so the detail can be read better on the site

This is fascinating stuff - it really brings home the scale of the ‘great undertaking’. The logistical preparations are just incredible.

I just took a quick look at some of this stuff. I was looking at ‘Annex No. 2’ and wondering what ‘white or coloured’ designated - then it dawned on me. Of course, I know the US Army segregated its troops but to see it so starkly was a bit of a shock. I’m not making a political statement, but it brings it home. This is great stuff, Temujin, thanks for sharing.

Your welcome. It always amazes me the information that is held by Fold3.com……..but their search engine is “lacking”…….as you can often plug in a unit, or a search item and find very little……….then while searching for other “stuff” you come across a wealth of information for what you were originally looking for OR new info that you haven’t seen.

This one was amazing, as you said you look at logistical preparations, the total “population” for all these camps was almost 50,000 troops……and this was only one area of Britain. And reading this file, you also see the MASSIVE ENGINEER involvement to keep roads, bridges, trains, fuel dumps and pipelines built, working and protected…….and just the organization involved to keep the camps in food, fuel etc as the troops “passed thru” to their final destinations on invasion fleet vessels etc……..and then the logistical tail need in the CZ (American nomenclature for “Communication Zone”……which Canada/Britain etc would call the “(LOC) Lines of Communication” troops etc. As I was reading this I kept wondering “what is CZ” until I spotted what the acronym meant.

OK, I’m babbling now, need to stop…..and I”m NOT trying to sell memberships in Fold3.com…..it’s just a resource that is getting access to a lot of information (and of course it’s OWNED by Ancestry), its a little “shy” on the Allied side (mostly American) but its files and information on all the Allies is growing….

    Cheers

That fold3 looks good - though US-centric, of course. I’m tempted, but right now I’m paying into enough ‘associations’ and subscriptions! Does look interesting, though. I’ll bear it in mind as/when I need anything specific.

It is good, I get a reduced price with purchasing with Ancestry or Newspaper.com

If you need a search on something specific, let me know, I’ll see if can find for you and send what I can. I’ll PM you my address

That’s very kind of you. I’ll let you know! I’d looked at the ‘package’ deal - need to rationalise my expenses!
